I am hoping to shorten the barrel on my M14s to 18.5". Do I need to modify the gas system at all? Anything else I should be adjusting?

Thanks for the help. There are guys with some serious knowledge on this form.

Also searching for a great muzzle break. Any suggestions?

MB: If you want a brake and not a FH, go with the Dlask bull brake IMHO.

As for shortening to 18.5, just get a competent gunsmith to chop it. The two I know of that do this properly are Dlask and Gunco in Ottawa.

Next month the Doc will be re-opening his shop. In all fairness I would ship your whole rifle & stock to him to get done. I wouldn't even bother chopping the extractor or ejector myself. Get him to tune up the rifle, unitize the gas assembeley, chop the barrel & re-thread it to recieve this brake;

Plus I would get him to do a trigger job and look for a member on her call Robmcleod82 and get 1 of his kick @$$ op-rod guides.

FWIW, if you don't want to pay for the full meal deal, Thomas (M14Doc) uses Dlask to shorten barrels and does the rest of the work himself.

If all you want is just the chop, you can send it directly to Dlask.

"...need to modify the gas system..." You mean other than move the whole thing back, drilling a new gas hole and shortening the op rod, et al?
