let get back to topic, you post on 7remmag is very believable, that why I said something, it got a very high BC for some bullet, like the 162amax, at 3000fps it by far one of the flattest shooting round, make it very easy to drop game at 600meter, the only thing I am shooting these day are 260rem, and 308, these caliber are easy to shoot, with 260 rem out to 700meter, hitting 6" gong size is easy on a calm day, but when windy, take some guessing and estimating. I am looking at getting a 7mm remmag, with this caliber , hitting gong out to 700meter make alittle more easy, even in windy day.

I have all of my life hunted with the 7mm because like your 260 an excellent long range caliber. I remember when I served in europe my squad had a designated sniper team and at that time they were using 338lapua, great round but not very common with the north american side of nato. And also never really caught on very well with north american hunters, partly because of the price of the ammo and also because not very many commercially available guns come in that caliber.
 
338 Lapua not considered a hunting round. At least not in my books. I hunt with 338 Win Mag, 7mm Rem, 30-06 and 375HH. I practice out to 600 with all of them. I like 338 Win Mag the best but that is because it is one I shoot most often.

The 338 Lapua is more of a special situation hunting round reserved for special places.

Anyway I am looking to either rebarrel a 995 sako into a 7mm remmag, or get a rem700 sendero in 7mm remmag, it would be a perfect hunting gun and also long range, As I already got several 300winmag, I think the 7mm would be my next project, just finish fluting this heavy barrel 30cal for a 300winman, but change my mind, going to a 7mm remmag.

Yup you probably have a point. Although with the advent of the ultra mags, how much of a difference is there between a 338um and a lapua, ballistically not very much.

Very true about the Ultras. I find such calbers to have punishing recoil in hunting rifle form. Just too light for my liking. My Lapua is darn near 20 pounds. Much more pleasant to shoot well and often. She sits firm in the wind and absorbs the recoil very nicely.

I prefer not to shoot rifles that punish my shoulder and rattle my teeth.

While the .338 Lapua is a powerful long reaching cartridge, neither a 250 at 3000 or a 300 at 2700 is particularly special, in that similar velocities can be realized in a number of other cartridges such as the .338/378, .338 Ultra, and whatever it is that Lazaronni makes. For that matter my .375 Ultra will do it too . . . from a 20" barrel. The Lapua round is just what caught on with the military, so perhaps there is some mystique attached to it. But if you chamber that cartridge in a half minute rifle, and put an experienced and talented long range marksman behind the trigger, that combination is special, and is precisely what is needed for big game shooting at long range.
 
Muzzle velocity is one of many components affecting long distance hunting/shooting.
I'm doing 3050 with 300's:)

The 375 Ultra is a beast! Like to try one.
 
Can Hunt with anything you wanted to, 338 or 50BMG, as long as you willing to Lug the dame thing. 338lapua wouldn't be a bad choice for Hunting, Something in Sako 42 that won't weight 20pounds.
 
I never lug mine around. She just comes off the front seat, off the ATV or out of the boat and gets set up. I do not consider it hunting. Best described as sitting patiently waiting for a high odds shot opportunity to walk out.
 
I hunt with a bedded Sendero 300rum with a Harris bipod on it. It's a pig to haul around in the bush and I usually have it on a pack. Hauling around a 12# rifle all day is not for everyone. I have a 6.5-20 mk4 sittin on top and shoot it out to 1000yards as often as I can. I feel comfortable with the rifle to take a shot on an animal at 600 yards. Practice practice practice. That's all I can say. Oh, and not at a range. Practice where you would hunt. Practice in ####ty conditions. Practice in excellent conditions. You owe it to the animal that you are persuing to be the best that you can be. If you doubt yourself in the slightest way, you shouldn't take the shot. Like one of the other members said, he had to pass up shots at close range cause conditions weren't right. Same thing applies to long range.
 
Curious how many animals are wounded at long range. I bet it's a lot more than are killed. Seems to me a high price to pay (for the animal) just to stroke an ego. I'm glad I don't hunt with people like that.

Long range belongs on the target range. If you come across a game animal at 600 meters - you can certainly stalk to half that range (but FIRST you gotta get out of the truck;))

Lots of animals are wounded at close range by rifle hunters and bowhunters.
Certain situations do not allow a stalk to close the distance. You may or may not know this depending upon your experiences.

How about you hunt how you want and I'll hunt how I want.

There are people who can legally bait deer, guys who hunt bear over bait, guys who get to within 20 yds and shoot an arrow through game, guys who are in my hunting area shooting 13 times at a whitetail and not having anything to show for it. There's different caliber laws across Canada, are you going to preach to the guys that can hunt with .22 cal? What about the guys who hunt with a long bow instead of a compound?

You don't like hunting at long range, then don't do it.
 
Nice post. I happen to find 600 yard shots to be less than challenging. I practice often.
I use a caliber and bullet size that will kill effectively at that range.
