270win or 270wsm do they differ greatly ?

to answer previous statements i do like the feel of the savage, as well as price point, i looked at a savage at bass pro it was a 7mm though but i do like the fact that it is a package , and the removable mag, once i buy another bolt action i will go with something more expensive like the ruger m77 or a remington CDL i have capped my price range at $500 or a little over that at the most.i will get the savage in 270 thanks

This may or may not help but....

While I don't shoot any kind of .270 I'm a big fan of the 300wsm. Here's my thinking on the subject.

The .308 vs 300 wsm debate is much the same, have you considered the angle that having a .270 wsm will allow a lighter handier rifle that gives you (at least) the same power/range as a .270 that will need to be longer and thus heavier to do the exact same job? Just my opinion on the subject, I'd much rather hump a 5 1/2 pound 20" 300wsm in the bush than a 71/2 pound(+) .308 rifle that will do the same thing. If you can trim 1/3 off the weight of every item you pack along you'll have a much easier go of things... worth the extra cost of ammo if you ask me.

Like you my typical pack gun is/was a .44mag with heavy loaded 300grn FP rounds, I'm transitioning to my tikka battue .300wsm more and more tho.

Just my .02C

thanks for the thought i have only hunted for 3 seasons so far so i am learning as i go along i usually use my crossbow, or this lever 44 i have, but when i first stated i carried my sxs i got from my dad that was a classic all steel 10lb gun, as for this being my first bolt gun i believe i will have more in the future i also really don't pack much except the gun and usually water sometimes not even that, i have no experience shooting rifle callibers other than a 223, and 22lr , but weight is not a huge concern for me at this time but thanks for the opinion, i believe that it would be more of a concern if i was going on a long trip but for the day hunts that i do 7 pounds i think would not be a problem , i am 5,5 150 pounds as long as i have a sling i think my back will take it !

Actually if you buy the same model of gun ex a 110 savage in 308 and 300 wsm the wsm will be heavier as the cartridge is bigger.

Generally the difference in weight between a short and long action rifle of the same type is only 1/4-1/2 pound. So really you're only gonna be cutting the weight by 1/14-1/28 or less (given that long action weighs 7 pounds, short weigh 6.5, I just made those numbers up they're not the weight of a real rifle.) So not a major weight difference.

I guess I'm just slanted in favor of the Tikka 20", most other 300wsm rifles I've seen are 22" and have a heavy (well heavier) barrel. Granted I don't know the savage line at all and I'm sure they're fine, just trying to show the lightweight options of the wsm type rifles... though you might have to spend a bit more.

That said thinking on it now you could likely get the .308 in the same weight ( at a loss of power that probably doesn't matter ) in the same rifle.

IMHO, The 270 WSM is the only short mag that was a improvement on the original cartridge. I'm a .270 Win guy myself!

The only 270 Win I have kept is a Win 70 that shot so well I couldn't bring myself to rebarrel it. As the 270 Win is a long action and the WSM version is a short, there will be differences in the weight of the actions. However, if the WSM has a magnum contour barrel, then that will be a wash. The 270 WSM is faster, which buys you a little distance, a little less bullet drop and wind drift. Personally when I wanted a faster 270, I went with a 270 Wby, which is a little faster yet. But there isn't a whole lot of difference between all 3 of them. FWIW - dan
