Hello,

Noob here with a couple questions:

1. I was going to use an everyday gym bag as a range bag. When transporting my handgun....does the gym bag have to be lockable or is it good enough to have a pad/combo lock on the gun case? As well, does the ammo have to be in the locked gun case or can it just be in the bag?

2. I drive a Jeep...in other words no trunk....so, is it good enough to have the bag on the floor of the back seat or on the back seat but covered with a blanket?

3. When I purchase a gun, regardless or restricted or not, do I then need to go online and register it or is done automatically by the seller? (assume the seller is a dealer/gun shop individual).

4. Once having an ATT.....when purchasing any restricted firearm....that ATT covers ALL restricted owned by me correct? But I MUST make sure I have copies of my registration/ownership when travelling with them?

I know this is a lot and I appreciate your time to provide input. Have a great day,

1) The plastic case the gun comes in is good enough if it is lockable! You can then just put that plastic case in the gym bag, no need to lock the gymbag as well.

2) Yes as long as the bag is out of sight and the vehicle is locked you are fine.

3) The seller if it's a dealer registers it. If its a private sale the seller starts the transfer, then you complete it by calling in with a reference number from the seller. They then send you he registration certificate once its approved.

4)Correct, but you will need a firearm before you get the ATT. And in Ontario your club applies for the ATT on your behalf. So you will have to buy a gun and become a member of a club ASAP. Then wait for your club to get you an ATT.

One problem with many plastic cases supplied with handguns is that there isn't enough room for a trigger lock which is required for civilians to transport restricted firearms.

So you may need a slightly bigger, generic case to have room for the trigger lock, and maybe also a magazine or two, cleaning rod, etc.

And of course the generic case needs to be lockable, then it and all the other stuff goes in the gym (range) bag.

Hi. I hope no one minds if I toss a couple questions in here too. I just purchased a pistol for my wife. It will be coming home registered to me. Then I'll take a course and get the ATT to go to the club so she can start enjoying it. Now, my wife is starting through the courses to get her PAL/RPAL. Then she will take the ATT course at our club as well. Can she get an ATT to transport a pistol registered in my name? The idea here is that we will want to take the pistol to the range at different times, in addition to going shooting together, so can two different people sharing the same residence each get an ATT for the same pistol? Also, if we transfer the firearm into her name at a later date, will we have to get new ATT(s) to reflect the ownership change?

If your Jeep looks something like this:

Where it is just a roll cage and no covers, then you may run into some troubles with the law regarding safe storage and transport. Even though your doors are locked, someone can easily climb in the back and retrieve the hidden "gym bag" of yours. So the lack of security maybe in question if anything goes missing. If the jeep is covered by a hard top of some sort, then it is fine to place it under your rear seats and your doors locked.

Yes it is covered and thanks for pointing that out.

In Ontario, the ATT is worded to allow the transport of any restricted firearms registered to that address, so while you will both need an ATT, either of you could transport the others firearms, assuming that there isn't a 12(6) issue.
