Sitting on my lilypad in southern Quebec
We seem to be in a peak year here in southern Quebec. My neighborhood is crawling with bunnies. We usually have one or two living around the house but this summer we have at least 8-10. We can't drive down the street without 1 or two bolting across the road. I like having a few hopping around the yard but this year our garden is being hit hard. :mad:
Today my wife saw a baby bunny that was hurt trying to hop around without much success. I put it out of it's misery with the trusty .410. That #5 shot from about 15 feet was devastating. I found the head and a back leg...:eek:

Any other folks notice a peak in bunnies in their area?
 
There are dozens of Prairie Hares around my place. Can't discharge firearms here unfortunately:(. The next one I catch leaving a pile of #### in the driveway is getting a smack from my Beeman though.
 
They are thick here as well cree trapper told me we are close to be the 28 year peak.

Best part is my boy is just the age to take advantage of what that means! Gonna need yet another freezer me thinks
 
there are so many coyotes here that not much else thrives...

i would love to be able to find at least one in a rural area. i spent a lot of time trying to scout for them last year and i only saw tracks... the only time i see them is when i'm in the city visiting my parents

Even when there are oodles of Hares the only time you see them is in the last 5-15 mins of legal shooting light or in the first minutes of shooting light.
Hares survive by moving when Owls and thier daylight predators are unable to see them due to the changing light conditions and the slow rod/cone response the predators cope with inorder to have excellent vision either in light or dark. You might find a few in the shadow edges earlier or later but activity is very low in non dusk/twilight hours.

When I was a kid I'd 20 hares a night, month after month,on ground that I maybe ever shot 5 hares off in the day time. I had a kid's patience and we are talking many years!

You can find some hares during daylight but you gotta be looking very hard at cover and be lucky. Folks put up with owning idiot beagles for a reason. In abscence of a dog put on your best kickers and stomp hell out of anything a rabbit can fit under.
Also get into tight spots where immature conifers are over crowded. Literally crawl in and start looking. THe hares are in there. You'll see balck ear tips or an eye before you'll see anything that looks like a rabbit.
 
yeah seen quite a few around here lately. I work at a golf course and regularily see 5 - 10 in a day and we back on to the golf course so i see quite a few in the neighborhood as well. Especially in those 5 30 am drives to work.

I've noticed that too. Every time I take my dog for a walk around dusk, I'll see anywhere from 4-8 rabbits...

Not true for all provinces. Once one arrives at the Manitoba border, just about everywhere north and west of that point, one does not require a licence to hunt for any rabbit or hare as a resident. The season is every day you can legally hunt on unoccupied crown land.
Pretty much identical rules in Sask, AB, BC, & NWT.
(mostly all of the year, except community pasture rules, and various other no-hunting areas, IE-municipality rules)
