SmK= Stahl mit Kern= Steel with Core, meaning hardened core.

Armour-piercing. 178-grain FMJBT slug. HOT!

Note the brass cases; Germany was using STEEL exclusively for Army ammo at that time. Only BRASS cases being made were for the Luftwaffe (less feed problems... could get very windy trying to clear a jam on your 109 while you had a Hurri on your 6)... and for export to 'friendly' countries.

I would think this might be a part of a German 'gift' from that nice Mister Hitler to that lovely Colonel Salazar, something to go along with those BEAUTIFUL commercial-grade Kar 98ks.

Very nice, very nice.

I DO hope you're an ammunition collector. Would be a shame to bang this off.

Congrats!

I've got 20 or 30 boxes of that stuff left. Bought it in the late 80's for around $0.17 a round.

I burned God knows how much of that through my Bren back in the day.

Just avoid shooting steel case 8mm. the cases can rust from the inside. A friend was pulling bullets from the stuff and in several instances the cases broke in half from the rust.

I picked up two boxes of those myself. I fired off ten rnds, 9 at paper & one accidentaly at a gong. They are rated for 13mm of hardened steel at 100 m. The core got stuck in the 14mm thick gong. I put the rest away for emergencies.
