Most people who carry a DI overseas have never been issued anything else, so they can't realy compare honestly. Like the US Forces survey a while back on troops being happy with the M4; They had no experience to compare it with anything else.
O ya, shooting your buddy's gun at the range is not being issued and carrying the gun on duty.

The new HK collapsing and folding stock allows the weapon to be fired when folded. The Latvians got the old stocks. I agree the issued optics with it are in line with the inexpensive price they they are. The weapon shines when good optics are placed on it, with the help of KAC rails.

The G36 still has very strong sales world wide. It is a finalist in every trial it is entered into and usually wins.

Greentips is right on the SL8, but at the time HK was doing it's best to comply with German law. The Laws were relaxed when the HK MR223's were introduced to the Civillian market. This allowed them to be more progressive with the design.

Just keep it lubed and the carbon shouldn't matter all that much. If it does bother you hungry gave mad props to that CRT gizmo for keeping your bolt shiny.

That said I never clean my bolt tail and it causes no problems and it just hits a point where it never builds up more.

Last night we were talking about how well our issued rifles have been shooting here at Bisley and I was reminded that the brand new M4 the Aussies lent me in May was shooting 5 round groups of 20-30 mm with M855 during zeroing on their 100m electronic range (C79 Elcan off the mag). That said groups seemed to open up fast 300m and back I think mostly due to the reduced velocity of the 14.5" barrel.

G96 is your friend. Then use some spray on Rem oil after you've let the G96 soak in. Takes two seconds to wipe out the carbon after that. I use it for all my rifles, including my two AR-10 rifles.

Main advantage of DI rifles. Accuracy potential.
