I have a Remington Sendero in .270Win. It's got the 26" heavy barrel. I have been thinking about getting the barrel length cut down. Something from 21.5" to 23.5".

Pros and cons. I've got a couple of ideas either way, but I'd like to hear opinions.

It shouldn't lose as much fps/inch as somthing like a 270 Wby but it should lose more fps/inch than a 7-08. I'd stay around 22 or better like 23.5 sounds good. 26 is a bit long for me but it is a heavy barrel. I'd slug than barrel first and make damn sure you don't wind up crowning it at a point in the bore that has a larger diameter than previous parts of the barrel. That is an accuracy killer.

Velocity differences are going to be small enough to be purely conversational. Go with what you think you would like for handling properties. If it was mine, probably 20-22 inches. Most importantly, have fun! Phil

^ You know that's a consideration. I wonder how it affects the value of the rifle.

But you know what's funny? That rifle sat new, neglected, not wanted on the shelf in Wholesale Sports, for 9 years before I bought it. Nobody wanted it apparently.

Since I bought it, I've had a couple guys contact me wanting to buy it.

It will effect the Value more than the Velocity as far as it being a target rifle it will likely increase the accuracy with the stiffer BBl example Benchrest rifle use short heavy BBl's

I was going to say exactly what struff said. The slightly stiffer barrel may make it a bit better shooter. You might go to 22" but I wouldn't go any shorter.

I myself am partial to 22 inch barrels; they seem to provide portability, velocity, and shootability in the cartridges that I'm partial to. As for cutting down that particular gun, it will still have a heavy barrel, and I'm sure that you could find someone who would be willing to trade a regular weight barreled 700 straight across for that one..........I personally wouldn't do it.

Looks like most of us agree, no less than 22", and I would not go quite that short.
However, Mike had the best idea, sell or trade it for a sporting weight 270 with about a 22-24 inch barrel, if you are not going to use it for target shooting.

What do you hope to achieve by chopping the barrel?

I was thinking about making the rifle a bit handier to swing, point and carry. The rifle is a long sum##### and weighs +12lbs when loaded, but the weight is not as big a factor as the length.

Shortening the barrel will make it stiffer, might help the accuracy, should decrease muzzle velocity slightly, and will reduce weight just a bit. But the rifle will still weigh a ton...

I suppose it reduces the value some.

For the amount that it might reduce the value, you might be able to pick up another barrel for it and leave the original as it is in case you do ever want to sell it.

Leave it alone it's a target (heavy barrel) rifle, if it was a sporter then go ahead and hack away. I don't agree that a shorte barrel is more accurate, heard it many times but no evidence except for some old articles, changing the harmonics has every thing to do with accuracy rather that hoping that the added stiffness is of any value especially on a heavy barrel.

Yeah, what did Warren Page know anyway?
