"Light pointys" for a 30-30 single shot...

i bought some hornady 110 grain V-MAX to load into the 30-30 for something different. i don't use the 336RC to hunt, just for target shooting at the range and it is unusually accurate with anything i load into it and i figure this will be also.

Has anyone tried anything similar, with such lightweight spirepoint bullets? I am expecting very flat trajectories for a 30-30.
 
one obstacle i have noticed already is that they are about 1/16" too long OAL to eject a loaded round from the chamber due to the tip. im thinking of seating them slightly below the case mouth and crimping over,hmmm we'll see.
 
I love experimenting with "unconventional' rounds. I found some 100 grain 30 cal bullets at P&D one time. The lowest bullet data I could find for the 300 win mag in my book was 125 grains. I put in an extra 5% charge and let er rip. The bullets must have been going some kind of bizzard speed.......inaccurate as all hell, but a lot of fun. My buddy managed to tag a gopher with one at about 25 yards. It pretty much turned to mist :)
 
Yes, that thread was interesting. i was also thinking of trimming my cases down to accomodate the deep seating depth but i was concerned how seating so deep would affect accuracy. i think i'll give it a shot though. i may however just leave them long since im only using it as a single shot anyhow.
 
Trimming down the cases will mean you will get some residue in the chamber (like shooting 38 special i a .357) Something to keep in mind.

Accuracy would likely be more affected by where the bullet is sitting in relation to the lands than how deep into the case neck.

Trimming the cases made the magazine fed rifle work, but probably not needed for you.
 
good point, i get that residue buildup when using shorts in my .22lr... don't like it. but i love the silence of it.

the way i figured it the deeper it's seated, the farther away from the lands it is. i usually seat fairly close to the lands... under ten thou if possible. but i think i should just seat them normally, i just wont be able to eject loaded rounds. OK by me.
 
Just remember in a tube mag, using pointy bullets to load only 2 (one in the chamber and 1 in the mag) or only 1 in the chamber (top load) and if you load only one you do not need to crimp the bullet
 
I was thinking of using trail boss under a 110 cast bullet. The websites description on load development allows me to think it is safe no matter how much uncompressed powder you use, however will still follow instructions. The overall pointed bullet single shot is the part that perks my interest. Be carefull to not go under safe causing detonation and pressure spikes when using other powders.
 
I use 100gr .30 carbine bullets and Speer 100gr plinker bullets in my 30-30 all the time. I think fps is about 2600-2700fps. Nice and peppy and accurate.

No reason to crimp them, just seat them deeper.
I am not thrilled with any bullet of less weight than 150 grains in a 30 calibre. They fall off very fast over not too great a range and will be greatly effected by wind. A pointed, like spire point, 150 is, in my opinion greatly superior in a 30 calibre.

A 130 gr TTSX bullet has a B.C. of .350. Compare that to most FN bullets for a 30-30 (.180-.250 BC) and I don't think you will be giving up anything to a heavier bullet at 30-30 distances.:)

Very close to mine. I use round nosed soft point 110 grain M1 Carbine bullets over 27.2 grains of IMR 4198 in a 30-30 case. They are very accurate @100 yards. But one needs to change your sights for this handload.
 
I can't remember the load or velocities I was getting would have to look it up but I loaded/shot hundreds .366 BC 125gr Ballistic Tips in my 21" T/C Contender carbine when it was still a 30-30...

Shot several deer with it all lung or neck shots worked fine.

One thing I notice at least with the powders I was using 110gr 30 cal bullets were not faster than the 125's...
 
Just looked I was getting the same velocities with 110gr Sierra HP's/125gr BT's/135gr Sierra Spitzers = 2650fps I used the same 35grs IMR3031 load for these 3 bullet weights.

That 30-30 Contender barrel has now been rechambered to the wildcat 308Bellm = 150gr + IMR4064 = 2620fps.

I still have some of the 125gr BT's left on the shelf...

WOW that was already 15 years ago oh man I'm getting old... :D

This is only a concern if you're shimming the front of your cartridges to get the meplat lined up with the primer in front of it. If you're concerned about a round going off, line up a couple of .30-.30 rounds on your loading bench, laying down, and see if the primer is touched by the meplat. I bet it's not.
