New 260 build - DONE!!!!

Got a krieger bbl, PTG reamer, dies, just need some brass. Probably use some necked down .308 until I can find some head stamped .260 Hoping to receive the bbl soon to start setting up my lathe. I'll try and post as I go along this will be a learning experience for me. I think I am threading to a large shank savage so I can put this on my LRPV action. Not sure if I'm gonna keep the nut but so far I think I am. So this is what it looks like so far:

Kreiger 28" Kreiger Barrel SS 1-8T
Savage LRPV RBLP Action
Savage target accutrigger
HS Precision Stock

Kind of torn between threading for a rem action to have access to all the stocks and other bits available.

I will be using a 4 jaw chuck with the bbl going through the spindle bore and held by a spider on the muzzle end. Have a range rod on order from PTG for indicating the bore. I built a free floating reamer holder that uses a bearing welded to a holder that will mount in my tailstock via jacobs chuck. The reamer will mount in a holder that has a piece of polished hardened steel as a surface for the bearing to push on as the reamer is advanced

Any thoughts??

Sounds good. Seems like there's quite a few .260 being being build lately.

I'm having one build by ATRS as we speak. I sent him a Remington LTR, a 24" 1:8 Varmint contour Gaillard barrel, a B&C A5 adjustable stock and a Seekins DBM. We'll see what it looks like when they're all together!

Be sure to post some some pics when yours is all done.

Great job, did you do it yourself or somebody else is doing it?, Savage wouldn't be a bad choice at all for that caliber.
 
Looking good, should be a shooter when it's all finished :D
I did a very similar build a couple years back and loved every minute of it (started with a Stevens 200, PacNor .260 barrel) and it keeps up out to 1000, so you shouldn't have any trouble since you're starting off with a better action.

I'm doing almost the same thing now with a MacGowan barrel. Glad to hear it worked for you - I'm looking forward to shooting mine.
 
Couple pics of the completed rifle. I decided to thread the bbl to a large shank savage action and use the bbl nut. I did this to simplify the project since it was my first try at chambering a bbl blank. I used a McClellan bbl in 6.5 1-8 twist. The reamer was PTG .260 rem with a .296 neck and .099 FB. The hardest part of the project was waiting for the reamer to get here.

My way of starting chambering work was to train first on spare chunk of metal number of times before using the real components. Savage's fine thread makes it real easy to make it to loose fit in the receiver and to much feed and insufficient cleaning as you go will chip your reamer easily enough also look out for reamer chatter. Train as long as nessesary to be familiar with the process.

I did turn down a piece and threaded it 2 times before chucking the actual bbl up. I then had a new krieger to work with but found a less expensive Gaillard to use for my first go. Shot it today with great results!!!

Loaded a few rounds with varget which I read is not the best powder for this round, results were good though. Shot these at 100 yards. Gotta get some H4350, then try again. Didn't measure the groups but the large orange dots are 1 inch so appears to be around 1/2 moa

I have heard that H4350 will give a very good result with velocity and accurate, I have great luck with 6.5X55SM, and also 260rem, what load are those group that you have shoot with, powder and weight?,
 
140 gr SMK's over 35.5gr Varget and the most craptastic brass I have ever seen. Rem 260 brass, you could visibly see the case mouths were not square and the thickness appeared to vary too.

I have read H4350 and H4831SC are tops but no one seems to think Varget is a contender. I always have a 7#er of Varget on hand cause I use it for almost everything. I really think some better brass will help me out. I was checking the fired rem brass and the mouths are definately not square. I resized some win .308 brass and trimmed them to length, will give em try for tomorrow with the same load.
 
I try out varget one several year back, according to Hodgdon website on reloading data, it show that with 36grain will give velocity somewhere around 2600fps, this is for 6.5X55SM, I may try Varget again in 260rem, it may give a better result.
