How many is too many??

Guns I mean. I'm not talking about enough guns that the family calls an intervention. I'm already past that. I was wondering how many before the Canadian Firearms registry says you are a dealer or a collector and you made need a different permit. Any ideas?

dunno, I'm already past what one would call a normal amount of rifles for hunting, i'll let you know when they start to torment me . BTW I have a friend with over 600 rifles and he's still not registered as a collector or anything else. He just buys and shoots his rifles .:p

Wow, I don't feel so bad about how many (or in this case, few) I have :D

There isn't one number that constitutes too many. It depends on your circumstances.

If you can't get around to shooting them all maybe that's too many. But if you are saving some of them for later, it isn't.

If you can't remember how many you have, or what they all are, maybe that's too many. But maybe you just need to improve your memory.

If you haven't got enough space to store them all properly, maybe that's too many. But maybe you just need more space.

It's not how many you have that makes you a collector, it's that you are collecting them. If you only have three or four, but those are ones you collect, you are a collector. If you have a thousand, but you just own them and keep and/or use them, that's not collecting.

CFC won't consider you a collector unless you declare yourself to be a collector and do the necessary paperwork (but if you own more than ten, the regulations will place certain obligations on you concerning inspection of your secure storage, which are automatically applicable to collectors, even though you won't be officially classified as a collector.)

They might have a rule or guideline about buying and selling a certain number within a certain time period that may make them investigate whether you are dealing for profit. But obviously just buying, no matter how many, doesn't make you a dealer.

I bought 30 + rifles last year, not even a hiccup at the cfc or the MB cfo's office , each one was immediately approved and processed . Never had a problem with how many I bought at a time. oh , wait ! i got asked once why so many , and I said because I can, asked if I was collecting , I said nope I like to sit a month before hunting season starts to decide which of my babies go with me each day of the season . I got a very subdued "oh" heheheh

How many is too many? I guess that depends on your disposable income. As far as the CFC is concerned, when you reach 10 registered firearms you are classed as a collector. I don't think you require a special license or anything, but your house can be inspected by the RCMP without a warrant for proper storage of firearms and ammo. I am not saying it will happen with 100% certainty, but it can.

I think there is a limit due to space, and your financial situation. Collecting a little bit of everything is like that dreadful show Hoarders. Being compared to that show is a low blow.
I had been collecting guns for years and when the law changed I bought a gun and was asked what was the purpose. I replied it was for my collection. The CPFO office contacted me and said that I had to qualify to be one. The firearms officer came over, and asked me what I could tell him about my collection. I asked him what he knew about the firearms I had in my collection. He told me he didn`t know anything about them. I said I could tell you anything I wanted and you wouldn`t know the difference. Then I pointed out I had about 1000 books in my office and could hunt up most anything he wanted to know. He took the paperwork and told me I was approved.

LOLOL, hilarious. Or pathetic, depends how you look at it.

Believe it or not, the SQ has only just recently started giving out collector status to those who ask for it. Provided, of course, that you pass the over-the-phone exam. 30-45 minutes of my life that I'll never get back. The broad conducting the exam prolly didn't even know the answers to 50% of the questions. I think the toughest question was "Who created the Smith & Wesson company?" I so wanted to say "Mr T"...... :p

Oh, and I passed. Question to all those of you who have your collector status. Why is it that we don't have one shred of paper attesting to that effect? Nuthin', not even an extra number or letter on our PAL's?

No. As far as the CFC is concerned, there is more to being a collector than owning ten guns.

You aren't a collector unless you tell them you want to be classed as a collector and you complete the necessary paperwork and persuade them that you are collecting. Regardless of how many or how few you own.

If you are classed as a collector you are required to allow inspection of your secure storage if the authorities request it, within a reasonable time. If a collector fails to comply that alone can be grounds for a warrant to be issued for the inspection without his/her co-operation. If you are classed as a collector, even if you own only one gun, this regulation about inspection applies to you.

If you are not officially registered as a collector, and you own fewer than ten guns, you are not required to allow such an inspection just because they ask for it. If they do and you refuse, a warrant will not be issued for the sole reason that you refused the request. They have to come up with other reasons to persuade a judge to issue a warrant for a non-collector with fewer than ten guns registered.

If you are not a collector and you own ten guns or more, refusing to allow an inspection within a reasonable time is grounds for a warrant to be issued without any other reason, just as it is for a collector but it doesn't change your classification with the CFC to that of a collector.

I stand corrected. I like your explanation. 10 firearms does seem to be the limit before things change automatically though. Correct?

As a fellow CGN member stated that there is not one Iota of documentaion on your PAL or POL licence, I think this is because if they reconized this status ,we would have a right to posses our collection even if they take all others guns away, so there will never be any official reconition of this "Collector" status here in Comunist Canada. Be prepared to have to fight to keep your firearms ,as they will do just like Hitler did and bring in the SS and stomp and kill us law biding citizens right under their boots!! Please do not forget that if we stand and fight together we the people will not fall, ( from my cold dead hands will my firearms only be taken from me) I am an honest LAW biding citezen and will fear no tereny!

I don't recall the subject coming up when I called to register or transfer....
