300 win. mag or wsm?

If your still talking about .300win mag vs 300wsm, then I would pretty much say its a no brainer for me. I would get the .300win mag any day over the short mag. Just because the larger variety, and easily available supply of .300win mag ammunition. However, with that being said, they are pretty much the same ballistics, so if I were to come accross a great deal on a WSM then I probably would'nt pass it up. I often see really good deals on WSM because they just don't sell as good as there older Brother. It's not really that big of a deal to have to buy your ammo at a specific store and carry it with you when you travel. Just be sure you pack enough if you plan on sighting in your rifle if you bump your scope during travel, because in most cases you can't just go down to the local Canadian Tire to get a box of it, if you run out away from home. Atleast that is my opinion from observations ( I own a .300Win Mag, so I do pay attention ).

I have or had both, my opinion is based solely on balistics/performance.
If you will be shooting bullets heavier than 180gr my opinion is that you should buy the 300 Win Mag, especially if you will be handloading. If on the other hand you are more concerned in having a powerfull short light package for hauling into the back country then something like a Kimber in 300 WSM will be your best bet.

I have always wanted a 300 win. mag for a moose/elk/high country gun. Maybe a rem.700 synthetic with that coated stainless barrel.
Now after doing some research I have heard the wsm is good too... Is the main diff. the shorter action of the wsm? What do you guys think is better.

I'd go the 300 Win mag for sure if I were in the market for a magnum.

While on paper the 300 WSM has near 300 Win Mag ballistics and vice versa, the Win Mag has stood the test of time and seems more popular now than ever.

How may snipers use rifles chambered in 300 Win mag vs how many use 300 WSM? When it counts what do the professionals use?

I have read some mention of lighter weight. How much lighter is the same rifle chambered in 300 WSM vs 300 Win Mag? The only manufacturer I found (I didn't do an exhaustive search) that lists separate weights for long and short actions was Savage and they listed the same weight for both the short action Model 16FCSS and the long action 116FCSS, both 7.15 lbs for example. I suppose the slightly shorter case of the WSM would weigh a few grains less and possibly it uses less powder but again, how much lighter are we talking?

I like my A7 in 300wsm, super light, and super accurate. Mine is a stainless synthetic, I would say it should be on your list to check out for what you have stated .

Anyone brash enough to say that the 300 WSM and 270 WSM isn't hear to stay should probably begin researching recipes on crow.
As for the "more" ammo variety and places to buy it: bullshivik.
There isn't a man among us that could shoot every variety of WSM ammo in a week of accuracy testing. In Salmon Arm they have had up to 11 different loads to choose from.
Oh, and I casually have seen 300 WSM on the shelves of Canadian Tires from Saskatchewan to British Columbia, so you needn't worry about that neither.
I agree that the 300 WM has an edge on the WSM of about 75-125fps depending on the projectile, but that is really for the reloader. There are very few factory loads that venture the 300 WM over 3050fps, and most WSM loads hover at the 3000 mark.
WSM guns can be 3/4lb lighter in some brands (Kimber) and most are about 6oz lighter.
As for accuracy, the sniper statement leaks horribly; name the departments, agencies, and military out fits that don't use .308's, 338 Lapuas, and 50 BMG's for there precision and long range work, and then whittle the rest down to 300's. I would wager less than .5% of the whole have them in their armory being used regularly.
Nosler has started using the WSM for the majority of their accuracy testing do to the fact that they find it a very inherently accurate cartridge. It usurped the .308 for most bullets above 150gr if I read correctly. That says something.
Just feel out some rifles and pick one. You shant regret either.

I have a Tikka M695 in .300 win mag. It is the most boringly accurate rifle I own. It will take anything on 4 legs. Nice heavy synthetic stock. Rifle weighs just over 9 lbs scoped. The most common mistake made by guys is buying a cheaper/lighter rifle in .300 win mag and expect to be able to hold on to it. I wouldnt buy one in say a Stevens 200. It will beat the face off you.

Both my son-in-laws opted for the 300 WSM, I use the 300 WM. One in Rem. 700 XCR, and one in Tikka T3 Lite.

No difference in performance, and I think they actually kick just a tad less, too.

Having shot both enough at the range, I've got to say that, while no complaints with the Remington, that Tikka is one kick-unowhat sweetheart of a rifle! Action is smoooooooth as silk, due in part to the clip design I'd say. Trigger was as perfect out of the box as you'd expect from a gunsmith tuning. And right from the get-go, first box of Fusion 180s, it's punching 3 shot sub MOA groups! All that for a pretty decent price compared to the competition.

If I ever get around to another rifle...for some reason my current Vanguard seems to gain a couple pounds every season lately...thinking either one of these Tikkas, or maybe the Sako A7.

But I'm leaning more and more toward the .270 WSM instead.

Ballistically they are pretty much identical. The 300 LONG MAG will give you a teeny bit more velocity if you handload. This is true for bullets form 125gr to 200 gr. I never tried 220 gr bullets in my 300WM or 300WSM.

Since performance is pretty much identical, it really comes down to finding the rifle you like. If you find a rifle you like and it's chambered in either cartridge, you can't go wrong.

If I was a sniper, I'd maybe be interested in what other snipers used. Since this is a hunting forum, I'd maybe be more interested in what most hunters use.

Mostly, they use 270's and 30-06's...

In talking to people in the industry I think they are selling more 300WSM than 300WM currently (nothing to back this...just conversations). Ammo availability is not an issue with the 300WSM if you "forget" yours. I live in a town of 12,000 in Southern Ontario where you are not allowed to hunt for anything with the 300WSM and both Walmart and CDN Tire both stock the 300WSM. As for price I have been buying 300WSM Winchester Ballistic Silvertiips 150grain at Basspro for $33.00 a box, which is cheaper than the 300WM.

I'm from small town Southwestern Ontario also. Bought a few boxes of Winchester Supreme XP3 150gr at Lebaron's for $53. The Silvertips were $45. I guess I'll be stopping into BassPro. Stay clear of Goble's in London. Same ammo for $80!! Never thought to check Walmart. I wonder if there is a thread dedicated to the lowest factory ammo prices around...?

I've shopped around in Canada.
Lebarons on-line catalog has the cheapest prices for factory loaded ammo of any I've seen this year.
$16 and change a box for Remington.30-06 Core-Lokt ammo. The same ammo was $25 and change a box at the Wal-Mart I checked and about the same at Crappy Tire. The .300 Win. mag. Core-Lokt ammo was $21 and change at Lebarons and roughly $35 a box at the aforementioned chain stores.
I'm sick of the 'on backorder' notifications on the Cabelas Canada (formerly sir) website and don't even bother to look there any more. I thought choices at sir for guns, ammo and reloading supplies would expand with Cabelas taking over and just the opposite has happened.
I like the .300 Winchester magnum and own 2 rifles in that caliber and have put down several moose and deer with them over the years. The velocities advertised for the new Hornady Superperformance .300 Winchester magnum ammo look impressive if they are true and not just promotional bullfeathers. I like the Hornady bullets and will be testing this new enhanced factory ammo.

My thread is back up! Ended up getting a nice winchester mod. 70 extreme weather in ... 300win mag. Beauty :D

Nice choice. I mounted a scope on one of those in 30/06 for a fellow at work a couple weeks ago. I liked it. Good value for a reasoanble price.
