I know this may sound strange, but what would the legal ramifications be behind hunting those generic white and yellow butterfly/moth things? Would a license be required, or would it fall under 'pest-control'?

butterfly hunting

Butterfly hunting/shooting was good sport when I was a lad. We would take our Wincheswter 42, and everyone would have a front pocket full of the 2 1/2 inch shells. We'd hunt safari style with the shooter in front of the line. When the shooter ran out of shells, the next person in line would take the shotgun, load it, and it was his turn till he ran out of shells.

It was a good way to spend a lazy summer afternoon.

Our targets were the white and yellow butterflies that you see in alfalfa fields. We wouldn't shoot Monarchs or any of the other fancy butterflies.

The white and the yellow butterflies are a challenge to shoot at, as they have such erratic flight movements.

When I was a kid I used to shoot those white cabbage butterflies in the garden with a cheap russian air rifle. Would put a paper plug in the barrel and drop silica sand infront of it from the muzzel end. Had to be close to connect...say six feet. Never got checked by the game warden though;)

Why shoot a butterfly? They aren't pests, they're nice to look at, and they pollinate flowers. Shoot all the deer flies etc. you want, they're harder to hit and a PITA.

Some of us even go trophy hunting..... ;)

If you've ever grown broccoli or caulliflower, you would know that yes, they can be pests. Unless you like eating green worms wth your veggies

I dunno....I'd go with a 12 guage....:nest:

Guys, anything less than 50 BMG is just leaving yourself open to butterfly mauling, in my experience. I got taken down by a tiger swallowtail once years ago and I was so shaken by the experience that I couldn't go near pools, beaches or strip clubs for fear of seeing a tattoo of one!
On an unrelated topic I'm also terrified of dolphins, lollipops and rainbows but that's a whole different issue...
