cant find 147gr cmj 9mm loads with w231

i can't find any loads for this bullet with w321. i know its not the best powder for this bullet but its all i got, have about a quarter bottle left, i was using it with 115gr cmj.

whats a good powder for heavier 9mm?

I use 231 for 124's and Unique for 147's.

3.7-4.0 grains Unique under 147 Grain AIMs loaded to 1.105
Power Factor of 131-134 in a CZ75b.

I also use Bullseye , Longshot, and VV320 all with 124 and 147 gr jacketed bullets.

i like w231 for 9mm but i read that i need a slower powder for 147gr. i found some load data on winchester's site. 3.9-4.3 grains. i loaded 25 at 4gr and 25 at 4.2 with 1.15 OAL. see how that shoots.

The Lyman pistoal and eovler reloading manual has a load in there for 231 with a 147 FPRN TMJ bullet; you might want to look there. I am planning on picking up some Win WSF soon as one of the guys I shoot with has had good luck with it with this wieght of bullet.

I load 3,6GR of 231 with 147GR Campro Bullets = 132PF

W231 is a bit fast for 147gr bullets. Hodgdon.com doesn't have loading data for the bullet weight and powder; but Lyman lists 3.5-4.1gr and OAL 1.115".

Just to remind you guys, use faster powder for lighter bullets and slower ones for heavier bullets; e.g IMR4756 or VV N340 are good for 147gr bullet, thou IMR will give you lesser PF or velocity with higher outside temps.

I load 3.7 gr of W231 at 1.115 OAL with these bullets. Works great in a NP34 Norinco.

3.6gr of 231 seemed to work fine with a 147gr LRNFP but was a bit dirty. I was going to try WSF but couldn't find any in stock and tried universal. It is a lot cleaner than 231.

4.0grs of W231, 147 aim cmj, oal 1.145. Used in a STI 4.15 Tactical, STI Trojan and Glock 17. Works great in all of them. Get about a 135pf out of the Tactical.

got a chance to try out these rounds last week. 4.0 gr of 231 was a little too hot for the 147 swaged cmj, there was some bulging of the case near the rim. im going to try again with 3.5gr this week.

When you are at the top of the load charts and a tiny case like 9mm, small changes in powder weight and/or OAL make a HUGE difference in pressure.

When you take load data for a max cartridge in a small case also look at the LENGTH of the bullets used in that load, not just OAL. If your bullet is significantly longer than the one in a published load, then you have to seat your's longer and/or reduce the powder.

What you need to do is to match internal case volume of your load to the published load, if you are not using exactly the bullet in their load.

Example, switching from a published load that uses a FP 147gr to a pointed 147gr, at the same OAL, will reduce the internal volume of the loaded round, and can drastically increase the pressure.

I was using 231 with Frontier 147FP this past Winter - someone once told me my combination is like trying to move a 2-by-4 by slamming your hand into the end of it. It's a fast burn, but I was happy with the results.
