SVT38's are more primitive than the SVT40's - It was their deficiencies being noticed and the designs altered to produce the very reliable and accurate SVT40's.

Absolute easiest way to tell them apart is the cleaning rod - on the SVT38, it is slotted on the right side of the rifle, completely visible. There is also a difference in the fore-end of the stock; the ventilated guard is much smaller.

Wow that cleaning rode us out like that. Just wondering parts are interchangeable?

Possibly, but I can't be certain and I really wouldn't recommend it regardless - the '40s replaced the '38s for a reason. Parts from a '38 could be too rough and inferior, possibly dangerous; and parts from a '40 might not fit properly, or if they did it could cause another part of the rifle to fail. (Read: possibly causing the action to grenade.)

I'd love an SVT38, myself, but it'd be kept in a special place on the wall. I'd use the '40s for shooting.

Some of the SVT-38 rifles were rebuilt into SVt-40's, receiver bridge at the front of the action will be slightly longer.

Sergei:

ALL SVT40's in certain date ranges have the receiver rails. They are NOT snipers. The real sniper guns have a groove machined into the back of the receiver at the top where a special key held the mount on.

A railed receiver gun is worth no more than a non-railed gun.

I have 4-5 with a grove so those are sniper ?

I doubt it. I think you are not picturing what I'm saying. NOT the grooves along the receiver, one big semi-curcular groove perpendicular to the barrel at the top rear of the receiver, right above that little panel that swivels side to side.

I will post pictures tomorrow of what I have and we can discuss that.
Thank you for your input I appreciate that.

Regards,

One of the SVT40 rifles I bought came with a SVT38 magazine. So some parts work.

Also just my opinion but the SVT40 is a significantly nicer firearm than the SKS. The SVT40 has a lot of modern features and the build quality feels more refined than a SKS.

But your rifle was SVT 40? I wish I could bring some extra magazines for SVT 40
