300 win mag good enough for...

Why any person would want a 300 Win Mag or 300WSM defies all form of modern intelligence.

Choose 300 RUM and use Hornady Superformance ammunition with the ultra progressive propellant in the shiny new box.

In my experience stock fit plays a big part in felt recoil, so taking the time to have a gunsmith or knowledgeable friend help fit a rifle stock to your personal ergonomics is a good idea.

Fit & stock design. If it is straight Classic or Monte Carlo style. I was always told straight Classic stock has less felt recoil & never believed it till I had a few straight stocks to compare.
Always have been a Monte Carlo guy because they fit so nice.
Recoil is not an issue for me, but there is a distinct difference I've found. I find more of a push on a Classic & more of a jump with a monte carlo.
That may be entirely different for someone else though.

Thinking of getting 300 win mag in semi auto. Is it enough for black bear or even grizz?

It's a good cartridge but it's not the hammer of Thor. It will throw the same weight bullet about 10% faster than a 30-06. Both of them will take bears of any persuasion if you are competent with it. If you shoot poorly both will disappoint you.

The hammer of Thor part comes in with the heavy rifles.:D As good as the .300 is, it's still just one of the biggest of the small guns.

Bullet energy is calculated using the square of the velocity. A 10% in increase in velocity is a lot more than it first appears.

will a 300 Ultra Mag or .416 Rigby be sufficient for rabbit hunting?

Maybe...

A 10% increase in velocity gives you 10% increase in MPBR. In more simplistic terms, the 300 delivers 30-06 energy levels 10% further out.

For some reason the newbs get all wet and bothered by the MAGNUM nomenclature. Disappoints the $hit out of them when they find out the 300 winmag is only 10% better than a 30-06. They think it should be more, and that measly 10% hardly seems worth the effort when they consider the 10% velocity gain comes at the cost of 30% more powder.

I like the .300winmag, it's my go to hunting cartridge. But i wish people would stop trying to make it into something it is not. For a real heavy hitter you need to go up in bullet weight and diameter. The 300 winmag would not be an optimal choice for griz or dangerous game, IMO. But it would be 10% better than a 30-06.

Personally I have skipped the 300 Mag class altogether... I don't need that kind of range here in Ontario. I use a 308 because it's light recoiling, powerful enough and inexpensive to feed (and I can always find ammo, though the 300 Win Mag is pretty common too). If I know there would be a chance i would be hunting grizzly or even encountering one I would probably take a medium bore rifle like my 375 H&H. I would feel pretty comfortable with a 338 Win Mag as well... For me, who likes to own several rifles at a time I find the 300 to be a compromise cartridge that is too much for 99% of what I do and not enough for the rest. It'll kill anything you hit properly but the medium bore just gives that much more of a whack...
