Hi all, I have just a quick question. I checked the forums and found nothing relating to my issue.

I have a buddy who has a ww2 vet bring back 1911 pistol which he wants to sell because he has no licence and no use for it as it was his grandfathers that was passed down to him.

My question is how hard is it to register the pistol if it has never been registerd before? I heard that you have to get someone down from the cfc to 'verify' it. Is that true?

What would be the steps to get the ball rolling? Does it matter that he has no restricted licence? I once tried to buy a .22 rifle off my boss who's father had it but never registered it and the cfc was giving me all sorts of hassle ie need the licence of the person that owned it, well he died and i dont think he had a licence anyway i just gave up on that.

I really want this pistol as its a good buy for 200$...also can i still get it if i dont have a current range membership?

As far as the gun goes, they'll be happy to register it. You better make sure you have a RPAL before you try, and a current range membership or it may get tangles up a bit.

It's easy, but he needs his rpal to do it. You phone the cfc and tell them you want to register a pistol thats never been registered. They check the serial no. and if it's not in the system they will turn you over to the verifiers in Ottawa. Make sure he has the gun in front of him. They will go over serial no. proof marks , barrel length etc. They will then give you the frt no and the verifiers name and her no. You then register it on line and thats it. All this is done over the phone, and takes about 1/2 hour. Then you get the certificate as per usual

If memory serves me right , if he doesnt have an RPAL and hes in possession of an unregistered handgun , he stands the chance of the police/RCMP knocking on his front door and taking it away , then he has almost NO hope in hell of ever getting it back , even after he has his license . The police either lose them or throw them out by "accident" cough ####wolves.

Thats why everyones giving you the facepalm , tell him just to keep it quiet for now until hes licensed .
 
"...good buy for $200..." You bet. Issue .45's, in decent condition, can run 2 grand or more, in some places. However, the troopies(here nor Stateside) were not allowed to keep issued firearms. Canadian troopies were not allowed to bring back handguns.

I bet one of our fellow Winnipeg CGNers with an RPAL would LOVE to help you out for the time being and register it in there name to keep it legal. :)
 
If the pistol has never been registered before, then why does the friend need to be the one that registers it? Why can't thewolfeofdeath be the one that calls the CFC to register it? Or am I missing something important here?
 
Too bad, I wish it was more simple to get it registered. Want to keep up complience rates and all of these roadblocks are in the way... Any way i will find out more in detail later on.
 
For that price, pay him for the gun. get your range membership, get your RPAL, and jump through the hoops to get it registered. That gun is worth significantly more than your paying him.

You have to have the appropriate PAL to even POSSESS a firearm, let alone have one registered to your name. So, if you want the pistol, you will have to do a few things, but do not mention this pistol to anyone, not your friends, boyfriend girlfriend, parents, or the RCMP/CFC unless you want to see that pistol seized. Also keep it at your friends house until all the paperwork is done, hes had it for this long chances are he will be fine for another few months (Assuming he does not do something stupid like call the CFC)

1: Call the CFC and request a list of firearm instructors in your area, DO NOT MENTION THE PISTOL.
2: Contact one of the instructors, and arrange to either take both the courses, or to challenge both the exams.
3: Assuming you pass the two courses needed for the restricted license, print off the PAL application from http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/form-formulaire/num-nom/921-eng.htm fillit out, include the $80 and picture.
4: Wait the 2.5 to 3 months needed to process, approve, and issue your PAL.
5: Apply to a range after receiving PAL
6: Contact the CFC and ask to register your Pistol (Assuming you kept your mouth shut until this point, you should still have it.) the description Dogzilla gave you is pretty much exact, except I think you will have to have a verifier verify the pistol in person since its restricted, but I am not sure.
7:wait for registration papers, get Authorization to transport to take it home, then take it home.

Let me register it in my name, I give him the 200 and I take it:D. 200 is a great price for even a moderate condition M1911.
 
I believe it is the current owner that has no licence, not the
buyer, If you have your Rpal , than yes you can buy and register
the gun yourself.
And offer it to me for sale.:cool:
 
Marschall is correct; it is the SELLER who does not have a licence, I myself have my non restricted and restricted licence. I was asking the steps involved to register a unregisterd pistol. Are there any complications with the registration because the seller has NO licence?
 
No, I just registered a luger I found at my dad's about 6 weeks ago. It had never been registered and he doesn't have either pal or pol and never has. They ask where you got it, just say a vet found it in his stuff and that he didn't even remember having it. No problems at all.
