I hear about M1 Garands converted to 308 Win; what is the result? Can this produce a good quality 308 rifle or are you left with a half-assed gun in the end? Is this a permanent conversion? Are there different inserts or solutions to choose from? Any thoughts on this matter would be interesting?

These work out just fine with a properly installed .308 Win barrel. No other unique .308 parts are required. If you wish to revert back to the standard .30-06, it is just a matter of re-installing a .30-06 barrel.

All recommendations are against using the 7.62 conversion sleeve in a .30-06 chamber as they have a tendency to work loose.

I have built 2 Garands using the Italian surplus 7.62 NATO Tipo 2 conversion parts(not available in Canada to my knowledge). These involve a .5 inch shorter barrel, operating rod, stock, rear handguard, and op rod spring. All other parts are unchanged. These have proven to be accurate and reliable rifles.

Any suggestion where one could purchase these kits?

yes, a re-barrel is the best way. When converting to a 308, you need a larger gas port.

Krieger has a close-out sale on 1:10 twist pre-parkerized, .308 short chambered Garand barrels that I can get up here for $400 CDN (+ tax & postage) Note, they still require gunsmith installation to remove the extra shoulder material and to complete the chambering/throating. smithtac.com is a good place for this work.

6-8 weeks delivery.

I'm wondering why you would want to convert? Isn't 30-06 close enough? And you would no longer have an original.

Aha! Because it's fun to do. Also I'm a .308 dude, so only one set of dies, brass, bullets , same powder, and with a tight match chamber, I FL size along with my Norc M14 /USGI bolt setup. Brass fits all my other 3 .308 boomsticks. :D

Life is good!

Hope this helps!!

I thought about rebarreling to .308 with an older Winchester Garand I had, but decided to spend the money instead on loading components and dies for 30-06. Regardless of which caliber you choose to stick with, reloading will make them much more palatable to the wallet.

If you have an M-1 with a bad barrel, rebarrelling to .308 makes sense. Easy to do, works very well.

The 308 conversions are from the Argentine Navy contract. Not shippable to Canada! Barrel is SA 1952 cut 1/4", op rod is Italian factory.

The components I have are Italian surplus from their conversions of Garands to the Tipo 2 7.62 rifle. Barrels are SA 1963 shortened by .5in as are the stocks, rear handguards, and op rods. One of my op rods is an IHC. The other is an SA. All of these parts were in as new condition with barrels gauging .301 at muzzle and .3015 at throat.

I'm not aware of Argentinian conversions to 7.62, although they did build a prototype of the Garand in standard .30-06. This was overtaken by their adoption of the FAL in 7.62.
