Hi folks,

I was wondering, other than colt Sporter SP1 Carbines/Rifles and Diemaco, does anyone else produce A1 styled uppers or A1 Carbines/Rifles? I saw one in the EE recently but I have a hard time paying for for a SP1 Carbine than a LE6920.

Thanks,

Mike

Are you just looking for a carry handle upper, or a true A1/SP1 upper (no forward assist, early handguards, D-ring, barrel twist, F/H, and sights)?

Ideally a full A1 upper, I'm not planning on shooting any greentip/penetrator ammo, so the 1/7 twist shouldn't be crucial... but I suppose if that is actually the going price for SP1s I might just have to build one.

I know Olympic, Colt, Diemaco and Armalite used to build the uppers for gov't rifles, but are there any civie options other than the SP1?

I must say: LOL in regard to Olympic arms!! :p

Armalite supplied "upper receiver" only for building some of the SPRs .

you need to find and old sp1 upper

they are expensive

You'll also require the old style butt stock, they are shorter and DON'T have the trap door butt plate.

WAY too many guys buy any old AR and then tell their friends it's just like they would have used in 'Nam. There are many differences BESIDES the fire control parts and the tell tale hole above the selector that holds the auto sear.
The upper should have the skinny barrel without provision for a grenade launcher, prong style flash hider, triangle handguards with the straight sided (not tapered) retainer, and no forward assist.
On later versions there could be a forward assist but it must have the teardrop shaped button, not round, and the birdcage flash hider would be OK.
And if the guy shows you an upper with a removable carry handle just laugh and walk away.

I set up one of my shorties using a new DPMS A1 upper... ...while brownells doesn't list it, they do have a product number and can also special order the teardrop fwd assist and the A-1 non-tapered delta ring.

I found this little gem in a gun shop sitting on a bottom shelf of a display case. A Colt collector brought it in on consignment. It was sitting for three months until I rescued it and brought it to it's new home. It's brand new unfired.

Just do what I do and go to ever gun shop and gun show. It will show up sooner or later.

RR, very cool. But that upper appears to have a Delta Ring when it should have a flat "slip" ring instead no????
I don't know... I see the same uppers on AR15.com. They are suppose to be a replacement M16 upper. I'm studying the Retro Balck Rifle website to get is historically correct for the build.

prong flashhiders were only used on the very early guns and were changed because they got caught in the bush. That's why they went to the closed ones. I have a XM16A1 and it is early with closed flashhider.

heres mine a real deal colt m16 a1 upper colt m16 bolt carrier and shorter no trap door stock and no finger bump pistol grip

on a sgw lower

The answer to the question is pretty much no, no one is building them. You will need to get lucky or count on building one using surplus parts (and then you will need to get lucky to find the parts). The upper receiver, barrel and handguards are the unique and out-of-production parts.
