The Finn's NEVER used PU scopes:runaway:

PE, AJACK, and a Finn propriatary scope.

2 different mount types, all attached to the receiver ring.

IMO, bubba. Even if you had the correct scope! I'm of the line of thinking that you should only permanently alter a historical piece if it's already been butchered beyond restoration. Then and only then, it's fair game for anything.

Having said that it's your property.

The original M-39 snipers I have handled, used a very distint Finnish scope similar to the WW1 Warner and Swasey box scope. If you want a fake sniper's rifle, buy one of the Ukrainian repro 91/30 PU rifles available at several dealers. Leave your M-39 alone, to few of those in Canada now.

Forgot about that those were off the Maxim guns.

Collectors Source sells high end stuff at high end prices.
"...one of those gotta have things..." Nope. It's an 'I want one' thing. 'I want one' is an excellent reason to buy anything.
Don't think I'd have bought from Collectors Source though. Don't know if they refinish or deal only with 'real' collector grade stuff.

I've bought I think 4 guns from Collector's Source and been very pleased with all of them. None of them were refinished and they were all better than described.

Lee Enfield, I learn new things every day. I was under the impression that the Finns captured and used a fair amount of Russian sniper rifles with PU scopes.

Like I said, just an impression. I just can't see them not using them, if they had them.

I guess I should look at the time frame. Maybe they just didn't use them against the Finns.

Collector's Source sells DAMN good milsurps, IF you can afford them. I buy from them when they have something I just have to have, but otherwise will look elsewhere.

So to summarize = nice stuff but expensive.

Glad you decided against it.

Just fyi too, they look pretty miserable afterwards. I had the same idea but luckily saw a pic before I tried it on an already d/t'd m39

For some collectors, whatever you do besides taking your precious "all correct" milsurp rifle and proceed and lock it in a safe to gather dust and rust for all eternity is "Bubba".

To sane people, it's your rifle, you do what you want with it.

I like to shoot mine, even though each time I pull that trigger the "value" decreases. Value is only dependant upon having the right buyer lined up, and is set by dealers anyway, according to whatever profit margin they like to run.

I think I disagree significantly. Shooting a milsurp, apart from a few rare cases, does not decrease its value.

Drilling holes into the receiver that should not be there, on the other hand, WILL decrease its value.

What makes an M39 better than most other mosins is its rareness and configuration. After you drill and tap it, it's just another sporterized mosin nagant worth the sum of its parts and nothing more.
