Correct me if I am wrong but I thought that target rifles usually have lapped barrels that are about as smooth and shiney as mirrors, why would they need break in. I thought that was for comparatively rough bore factory rifles. Nice rifle and it seem to shoot quite well.

Custom BARRELS have lapped finsihes but they are not as shiny as mirrors. Too smooth is as bad as too rough.

Barrel break in is a controversial subject, right up there with Q-Ray energy bracelts, Glucosamine, and pills that make your weenie bigger.

The pills work (if you tilt your head just right when you're looking down)....don't knock em till you try em. :D :D

If it feels good, do it. Feels good to me.....so I do it!! (Barrel break in that is) LOL

I've tried barrel break in and just cleaning and shooting, and I can't say conclusively that either method is better. I "feel" better when I do it the shoot 1, clean, x 10, shoot 2 and clean x 10, shoot 5 and clean x 4 way. That's 50 careful and cleaned passes down the bore, which should do the trick. I've tried variations on this theme with a lot of rifles, and, as I said, I've also just cleaned the bore and started shooting. Hasn't made my groups smaller either way. And while the "weenie" pills might work, it could just be perspective. - dan

Thanks for the reply, kind of what I thought but I didn't know too smooth was bad too.

How come every conversation between Richard and Ian ultimately leads to talking about pen15? I see a disturbing trend here. :dancingbanana:

My 6BR is the first brand new gun (even though the action was used) I have had, so under the instruction of Mick the gunsmith, I did a barrel break-in. Not sure how it would have shot without the break-in, but I do know WITH it, mine is a shooter. :)

Sweet looking gun, Paul.

Love to study it closer if Rick shoots at the Farky. That is a neat set up. Like the rear stock and ALL THOSE ADJUSTMENTS.

BARREL BREAK IN -

Making barrel retailers happy, 1shot/1patch at a time :)

Jerry

This has been discussed ad nauseum but since one has to do load work up anyway, a few extra patches down the barrel for the first 20 rounds isn't going to make one lick of difference to the barrels life if done correctly.

It aint the patches, it's the bullets. 3-5% of a high performance cartridge's best (and even TOTAL) barrel life doing something of no proven benefit?

Whatever floats your boat!

Load work up has to be done anyway (hard to do without putting bullets down the tube) and the patches make no difference....that was my point. 2 birds...one stone whether it helps or not.
