Hi all,

I'm saving up for a CZ Shadow so I can (finally) take my IPSC Black Badge course and compete. One of the biggest questions I had was about replacing the rear sight with an adjustable one. Eventually my travels took me to the IPSC Global Village, and I found an answer. I'm recording it here so others don't have to undergo the pain I did.

According to Vince Pinto, Appendix D4 of the IPSC Rulebook, section 20.2, allows sight replacement as long as the slide is not modified:

"20. Aftermarket parts, components and accessories are prohibited, except as
follows:

20.1. Aftermarket magazines are permitted, subject to 19.2 above.

20.2. Aftermarket open sights (see Rule 5.1.3.1) are permitted, provided
their installation and/or adjustment requires no alteration to the
handgun.

20.3. Aftermarket grips which match the profile of the OFM standard for
the approved handgun and/or the application of tape on grips (see
Appendix F4) is permitted, however, rubber sleeves are prohibited."

Therefore, I'll be adding that to my Shadow.

As a follow-up question, I'm curious if anyone has used the LPA sights available through CZCustom?

CZ Custom has an "elevation adjustable" rear sight. I have been curious about this sight for a while, but haven't heard of anyone using it. Are you inquiring about the LPA sight set that requires that really tall front sight?

Yes, I am looking at the LPA sight, though I was not certain whether a taller front sight was required (thanks Mike).

My Shadow hit way high, as well as one of the club member's guns; I sawpped my sights out and do not regret it. A freind just bought one and it hits much closer to POA, as well as another club members who just bought one.

That's always possible, but for the most part these guns are set up quite well right from the factory.

Disagree, I've seen far more Shadows that shoot high than shoot anything else. Mine included.

i've installed the LPA adjustable on both my shadow and tactical sport with the 6.5 front . got everythings trough CZ CUSTOM/GHOST PRODUCTS,nice poeple to deal with....

it wasn't legal in 2009 but apparently the rules changed in 2010....now if they can apply the same rule for aftermarket grips in production, it would be nice.

this is the tactical LPA rear

sorry for the blurred pic, just showing the tactical/shadow LPA rear are pretty much both the same except the white marks for windage/elevation on the shadow.

2" high @ 20 meters with mine, it's not an issue for me thou.
If you are considering LPA sight similar to Combat or Kadet guns, or the one with FO inserts in rear sight - it's not worth the fuss. Former is of lower quality, latter makes sight picture too busy. The good LPA sight requires back of the slide to be milled = out of Production. With height adjustable rear sight only, you'll be shooting high, or will need a new 6.5mm front too.
We are still to see if rules will be changed or 'bent' as there is Shadow Target model now, which is considered to be a factory gun and that comes with milled slide and LPA sight.

Bottom line, I personally don't think it's worth messing with already very good Shadow sights. Unless you want to swap 1.5mm FO front with 1mm FO front.

I was R/O'ing at the IPSC Ontario Provincials this week. Saw lots of Shadows - none with aftermarket sights. To me that suggests most are ok. That's not to say there won't be exceptions, but I stand by my opinion that most of them shoot pretty well.

mine was shooting more or less high with the stock one depending of the load used on particular day

all this is variably influenced by the PF/load of the ammo used, but i think it just make sens allowing for adjustable in production...hell, it's like with a sport bike, adding a pipe is a no brainer, same with adjustable sights,so many options available for all brand of guns,it should be considered like a standard/stock mod...

Well 20.3 explicitly states that after-market grips are allowed now:

20.3. Aftermarket grips which match the profile of the OFM standard for
the approved handgun and/or the application of tape on grips (see
Appendix F4) is permitted, however, rubber sleeves are prohibited."

Ok, you've piqued my curiosity: which LPA sight model do you believe is good? I've been looking at the ones listed on the CZ Custom site, particularly the LPA TPU CZ 75 (BK).

Bottom line, I personally don't think it's worth messing with already very good Shadow sights. Unless you want to swap 1.5mm FO front with 1mm FO front.

I haven't shot a Shadow with a 1.5mm FO front sight, so I don't know if that would make a difference for me. Generally I prefer finer fiber optics, but that is for 20+ yard shots.

Sights and grips have been legal almost the entire time. The grips have to be of the same profile though. Sights can be adjustable or fixed. So long as you don't have to do anything to the slide.
I put a higher front sight on. Gonna get an even taller one shortly.

TPU CZ 75 - is what Combat and Kadet come with, not exactly very good quality as far as what it gives you for sight picture. Worksmanship is just ok.
LPA TRT CZ TS is a much better sight but requires slide to be re-cut.

Thanks.. What about other manufacturers? Any opinions?

Can't you just modify the sight to fit the existing dovetail in the slide?

The rule states no modification to the firearm.
Is there anything that says you can't modify the sight?

too lazy to pull out the rule book right now.

eta: looked up the rules.
Says nothing about modifying the aftermarket sights.

19.1 in appendix D4 kind of puts a stop to modifying OFM parts unless its minor detailing to remove burrs or adjustments unavoidably required to fit replacement OFM parts/components.

I may be ot to lunch but seems to me as long as you do not modify the handgun, do what you want to aftermarket sights to make them fit.
Is this correct??
