Springfield Armory 1911-A1 GI Pkg, Parkerized

It's a nice pistol for sure. I was only disappointed by it when I saw that it was made in Brazil and not in the US as I had expected. It shoots well, but you have to hold it correctly or it'll spit hot brass in your face, that's probably due to the fact that the ejection port isn't bigger like other more recent revision of the 1911. Sights are a little small so if you have some vision problems it might make it hard to aim correctly. Haven't shot this gun in a while but it would not always chamber the first round when using the slide lock. Might be due to a week spring. Never a problem when I "slingshot" the slide.

All in all its a fun little gun. I got it because I wanted a little novelty piece. If you plan on doing competition you might want to look at another .45acp.

Alex, would you consider reccomending him STI Spartan, that costs about same amount of money, and people on CGN have really good opinion of?

I had about 200 rounds through my GI when I sold it. I bought it new, and still miss it. Sold it to buy a 9mm, but looking for another .45 acp. Through the 200 rounds (I know, not a lot at all) I had zero problems, other than getting hit in the face with brass a couple times. I also wasn't a fan of the "made in Brazil" stamped into the frame either.

Anybody have any feedback on this style of firearm? Complaints, problems, positive comments?

This gun is a faithful copy of the original Colt GI 1911A1, ie. military issue, as used by and issued to the US Armed Forces in WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

It should work as reliably as the original but it will have its shortcomings like a stiff and creepy trigger, poor and difficult to acquire sight picture due to the smallish front and rear sight notch, the brass in the face complaint mentioned above, almost guaranteed hammerbite, need to shoot jacketed round nose ammo due to the unthroated barrel and unpolished ramp (unless SA has taken care of that). If you reload, your brass may have some flattened sides due to catching on the ejection port.

Accuracy would be combat acceptable, perhaps 8 inch groups at 25 yards if you are good.

If you just want a GI replica this is a good gun, otherwise if you will play with it as in IPDA, better to go with the Spartan.

I realy love mine but have to tell you to go with spartan.Better trgiger, better sight and esier to sell. I'm planning to get a ranger 2 or kimber covert camo with laser grip. (what a #### gun)

SA GI is a basic, reliable, bone stock 1911 from Brazil.
STI Spartan is a "loaded" also reliable 1911 from the Philippines.

Both pistol are in the same price range.

NAA.

i have a nighthawk custom grp, a kimber tactical 2, and recently picked up a springfield gi,
the above posts are very accurate.

You can get a better functioning 1911 out of the box by looking elswhere; however the springfield has that classic gi look that really grabs you. mine does not like to cycle anything but the roundnose 45acp rds it was designed for and the sights leave much to be desired.

it is fun to shoot and the looser tolerance will give you a reliable combat pistol once worked in.
with a little tweaking it will function smoother.

I was disappointed with the made in brazil part as well; however, it's not the end of the world I guess.

As the other guys have suggested, make your decision based on the intended use. There are better competition pistols available. that said I don't regret buying mine and I love the classic design.

whatever you choose, enjoy it and shoot it a while before giving up on it. You'll get good with any gun you shoot enough. these springfield guns a blank canvas.

If you are looking for a more "plain vanilla" looking 1911, but with better shootability compared with a GI pattern pistol, Springfield Armory also has the "Mil-Spec", which has taller sights, lowered ejection port, throated barrel, and beveled magazine well

I have both the g.i and the milspec, I think both are great pistols. Don't have experience with too many different manufacturers, but the fact that they are "made in Brazil" is not a deterrent for me at all. As for their fit, the g.i is solid and I haven't had an issue in the 3000+ rounds I've put through it since I bought it new, and the milspec is the same (at least two owners before me, unknown round count). Personal opinion, but you could do a lot worse than a Springfield when buying an "entry level" 1911.
