looking for your suggestions on a scope for long ranges i want to shoot 300 yards all the way to 1000. its going on a 110 ba savage arms in .338 lapua. lookin for something with good magnification. just shoot me some ideas and what you personally use.

Nightforce 12-42x56

Pick your reticle and give er'!!

I use the BR Model for F-Class but sounds like the NXS would be what your looking for.

i have a couple NF nxs 8-32 and love em!! the 32 power is a nice comprimise of magnification and vertical adjustment available. if you deciede to go past 1000 yards you will run out of vertical with the 42x. (42x =45 moa, 32x=65 moa) i have the npr1 reticle and it allows you to make accurate calls on misses. i use a 40 moa base and have shot out to 1 mile without having to hold over as i have enough adjustment in the scope. with the 338 the day will come when you want to move past the 1000 yard mark.

Either a March or a Sightron 10-50x56 could be all the glass you would need for your project.

I am awaiting the shameless plug for the Sightron mounted upon the Savage.

ROTFLMAO!!!!!

It does tend to be a bit like an infomercial here sometimes... Slap-chops, Sham-wows and Stevens 200's.

I second, third and 4th what Bingo and CyaN1de said.

Bottom line is you get what you pay for in a scope. The S&B are sooooperb. The NF gives up nothing to them at a slightly better price with slightly easier accessibility.

Pop out to an F-Class match sometime and look at the equipment actually used by guys that take their long distance shooting seriously. They know it takes a wealthy man to buy a cheap scope. I bet 90% are using a Nightforce or a leupold, with the greater portion using NF.

Sightron are good scopes, they just have poor reticules for F-Class shooting. March are good too. It is just a question of finding them.

Really?

With a 42x BR Scope (Less adjustment than the NXS) and a 20MOA rail I can reach out to 1000 easy with room to spare.

the 12-42 has 40 MOA elevfation adjustment. The 8-32 has 50

That is enough to allow a bullet a 155 grain .308 bullet with a G1 BC of .417 at 2900 fps to get to 1000M without a tapered base.

Interesting that two of the largest NF retailers in Canada now either sell Sightrons or is their Cdn distributor.:stirthepot2:

To the OP, this scope is one of my favorites and will likely do more then you need.

100mins of up, amazing optics and reliable tracking. With side and eye focus that work perfectly together.

If you want more mag, then

70mins of up and all the good stuff of above.

For LR plinking, I find that I don't use alot of mag like I do when paper punching. I want to spot my own hits and the lower mag/wide field of view lets me do that.

I think you will quickly find Sightrons showing up on the line at many F class competitions across NA. Given that much of this product line has only been out for about a year, that level of useage is impressive.

Those that are competing and getting on the podium, haven't complained to me about reticle options. But I am sure there will be new options from Sightron as time goes.

Quality optics have never been priced so well....Enjoy...

i should clarify when i said go past 1000... i meant like 1500 yards and further

with my 280 zero'd at 500 meters i need 15.75 min at 1000, at 1500 i need 39.5, at 1800 (basically 1 mile) i need 59.5. the 338 is similar in these numbers and with 40 min of up you would be limited to 1500 if you had all the up available to use. just pointing it out in case the op does intend on going past 1000.

According to NF the NXS 12x42 has 45 MOA and the 8x32 has 65 MOA total elevation.

I found that the 8x32 worked better. With a plus 20MOA rail I can still zero at 100 yards, at 1000 yards my 338 LAI needs 19 MOA that gives me enough elevation to get just beyond the 1 mile mark before I run out of elevation.
I need 52.5 to make 1850 yards.

If the 12x42 is used you run out of elevation at 1600 yards.
If the plan as the OP stated is 300 to 1000 either would work, I find that with the bigger magnification mirage is harder to deal with, so typically turn the power down on warm days.
