45 Elly ammo?

Isn't .45 Elly(.450 Colt) the same as .455 Webley? Or at least I think they are interchangeable. Here in The States we can get .455 Mark II ammo from Hornaday. For you guys north of the 49th Parallel I not sure what is available.

.455 Eley (.455 Colt) is a smokeless load of the .455 MkI case. The case is longer than the .455 MkII case length.

Luckily it appears that .455 chambers were always(?) cut for the longer case...

I'm not sure if they arre the same. They made the new service revolver in quite a few 45 calibers (45 colt, 45acp, 455 elly,455 webley.) Theres even some varience in the 455 webly depending on the mark. But the barrel is marked 455 elly so thats what I'm looking for. Unless someone is sure that something else would work.

Does any one have a line on 45 Elly ammo?

There is some .455 Hornady floating around, and more .455 Fiochie, all based on the MkII case. Both have extreme expense in common....

You're better off to find some brass (hornady, starline, Fiochie, or maybe even Dominion) and handload it.

A lot of people have thinned the rim and shortened the case length of .45 Colt to produce very strong and workable cases.

.455 Eley is the .455 MkI length case, the .455 MkII case is just like .38 Special to .357Mag, the shorter case will work perfectly in the longer chamber.

I have several .455's (Colt, Smith & Webley), and can confirm that...

If you can get some currently produced Fiocchi .455 Webley it will work fine in your old Colt New Service.... ;)

You'll likely have to pay ~ $55 Cdn for a box of 50 rounds, though....

Sometimes at gunshows you can pick up old Dominion mfg .455 Colt marked ammo. It will also work fine. Usually, it goes for $1 per round, though.

If you plan on shooting alot, you should just order a set of Lee/RCBS die set and a custon RCBS 255 grain (.455) hollow base bullet mould, some lead ingots and a pound of Bullseye and start loading, otherwised you will pay through the nose for loaded ammo! Just a note if you find any of the OLD WESTERN SCROUNGER 455 elly/webley ammo, DO NOT shoot it in any gun made as this stuff is extreamly overloaded! My friend Smith & Wesson 1917 cracked the cylinder in half on 3rd shot! hope this helps someone, dale in T-Bay
