Well, thanks to LittleBoyLefty reminding me how much fun small bore rifles can be I started searching(again). I have owned quite a few before but always of the more tactical look and most were way too heavy for my style of hunting. I wanted something of the blued/wood variation but there is not all that much on the market now days that I really like.

While browsing through Trade Ex's website a few weeks back I spotted a Winchester model 70 in .222 for a good price. Ordered it up the next morning and then hit the EE for a scope. Found a Leupold 6x from the same era as the rifle(1973) and got a great deal on that as well(thanks Scanner!).

I cleaned her up and slapped it all together before last weekend and hit my range with it Canada day morning using Plain old Remington Core Lokt 50g factory WSS had in stock. 10 shots to get it dialed in and it was shooting 3/4" groups at 100 and smoked the 2 and 300 yard gongs with ease.

Here it is:

The stock is a bit scratched but it will stay the way it is. She is a keeper for sure! Even spilled blood with it twice already at about 350 yards(both times) :dancingbanana:

Reloading dies and all components shipped and in transit...

Also wanted to thank everyone here who helped me get everything I needed to put this together(including reloading gear) for fairly cheap. Thanks guys!

Beauty! Love the leather scope caps and used sling, classic written all over it down to the cartridge.

nice setup...proves you don't need a stainless heavy barrel with $600 stock and a $1000 turret equipped scope to have a nice varmint rig...a M70 in 222 must be somewhat of a rare bird too...that adds to the appeal....unlike a 700 in 223.....well done;)

Yep, it's still NICE, Davey!! As rembo said, way nicer than a 700 in 223...:(:D

Nice job getting it 'christened' so quick too. ;)The deer will appreciate that rifle...

I like it, but I can't believe I see Weaver bases.

What scope?

.

The Weaver bases came with it so I figured go with it. The scope is as I mentioned a Leupold M8 6x from the 70's and is crystal clear with a nice purple tinge to it

I used IMR4198 in my .222. I'd start there at about 21gr.

I have a 700 Varmint in 223 here. Should get the bbl turned upside down and rechambered to 222.

I used to have a good stockpile of .224 bullets around but have to start from scratch again...
