Your first surprise is going to be when you see how big those Alaskan moose (Alaska, Yukon, northern BC) really are.
Next surprise will be when you find out what good meat they possess. Get him not later than about end of first week in September and with your professional handling of it, -wow- delicious.
As a point of interest, the largest, heaviest moose I ever shot was a cow. Huge.
Another big one, a bull, had steaks that were marbled all through with fat, and tasted like the choicest of beef steaks.

Actually I was out for a visit 12 yrs ago. My first day there Ted put me to work boning out a nice bull that was waiting for me in the garage. I got to do another later in the visit for another fellow. He muttered something about working for my keep. :p

When we were preparing to load the Otter, a group of hunters were getting off the same plane. They unloaded a moose rack they found in the lake that measured 75" across. I saw the tape myself. Needless to say, I was impressed!

If the 'safe highway' loonies here have their way, we'll be back to the days when you could buy your moose license at the local corner store.

I'm not knocking the method, if your province's game management plan has taken stock of the numbers. But there has to be good conservation principles behind it. There are some moose hunting areas in this province that probably have not been surveyed in 15 years or more, and vast areas of the province that are not easily accessible. If folks could buy their license at the local store, they would likely only hunt close to home.
