Civilian M1 Carbine

The closest you can get to an M1 is the Mini 14, which is basically an ER M1 carbine.

That said, It would be neat to have a non-restricted M1 in either 10 mm or 40 SW.
 
A company in the Gunrunner years ago sold 19" barrels and parts to convert M1 carbines to .45 Win mag.....................now it works for med game and they stay put near where they are shot.................Harold

Lots of problems with that conversion apparently - enough guns blew up that it was shelved....but a 9mm Win Mag would work nicely!
 
I dont think I would shoot anything bigger than a rabbit with my M1. The .30cal just doesn't have enough punch for anything bigger. Got a little ticked off while in my favourite gun store last week, some young guy said hey dad look at the antique rifle. Said rifle turned out to be an FN, the same gun I carried in the army which made me feel really old. I went to buy the gun out of nostalgia only to find out it was a prohib because of the selector switch. Really bummed me out.
 
2 kinds of prohibs in the world -

A) Prohib Due To............. (barrel length, overall length, F/A- pretty easy to understand)

B) Prohib 'Cause I Said So..(no real logic just have to learn what our masters don't like)
 
Well lads ... kind of good news/bad news sort of thing....

Good: I HAVE finally found a 19" bbl carbine, civilian version, it's an "Iver Johnson". Bore is excellent.... shiny and bright. At least he ran an oiled patch down the bore last time he fired it. Say, around 1990 !!

Bad: Bubba had it stored in the rafters of his garage... rusty all over.

Now, the rust is not terribly deep...more of a powdery coating all over. We sparyed WD-40 all over it and after a quick pint or two ( okay, well, maybe a few...) we rubbed most of the rust off with a heavy woolen cloth. Looks...well... let's just say "okay" I guess.

Ugly stock, looks like birch (?) and the rusty vented handguard makes it pretty nasty looking... but all there for... get this... $125 if I wanted it.

So... picking it up next w/e !!

( I'd post some pics I took... but not allowed to. Working on that right now, actually!)

Close your eyes and tell yourself it was recently excavated from a forest in Europe..

Trust me you will feel a lot better about the rust! :D

All joking aside, $125 sounds like a damn good price.. looking forward to pics!

Well lads, I picked it up this week .... I guess for $125 it's not too bad....



I was cycling the action and the SOB fell apart on me! Another frigging Patsy Cline rifle ...



Anyone want to guess what parts I need to change? Op rod? Bolt?

The bore. however is quite nice...



But she's butt-ugly.... I'd like to get it reblued or even Parkerized ... something... anything!







Besides the bolt falling out, though, I do have a serious enough question. Someone told me the "Plum" colour of the blueing means incomplete or improper heat treating of the receiver. Now this DOES concern me... as I don't need the little darling to grenade on me first time I pull the trigger. Now the guy who told me this is a Bona Fide bull####ter known to all ... so... any comments or suggestions from you good people?






Well... that's about it. Registration went without a hitch... the girl at Mirimichi correctly identified it as a civilian-made US Carbine, by Iver Johnson in New Jersey, 20" barrel, and best of all... non-restricted. They certainly do have their resources!

All seems to be Jim-Dandy with that.... so I first have to fix the bolt-falling-apart thing... and of course, convince myself that the Plum-blueing is really just cosmetic ( I sure hope so...)

Anyhoo... thanks for all the input on this forum, I appreciate it!!

Oh Yeah !!! Almost forgot ... I need a couple of 5-round mags for it. The old bugger lost the original years ago and just cannot find it.

Not a bad idea... anything over 18.5 is legal, right? I'd love to get the GI look, that's why I might get it parkerized. Already have a very cool forward band with the bayonet lug on it.

Another question... for the purists on this forum... since this is NOT a GI carbine, would I be ruining it's resale value should I make it into a USGI "clone" ? Just a thought, since the blueing is pretty well toast.

But how would you hold the front sight on? Seems that the sight is held onto that blade-like appendage (welded?/machined?) on the front of the barrel... mine has a standard automotive roll-pin holding the front sight to this blade. I'll drift it out today if I can.

I suppose I could try and find a new, short, GI barrel, but really, who wants to put too much money into a rifle like this. I'm NOT impressed in the quality of the parts or the finishing. Machining was TERRIBLE in my opinion. No wonder the civvy versions got a bad rap.
