Alright guys, i've read on here before that there are areas in Southern Ontario where you cannot use a centerfire rifle over .275 caliber for hunting. Just exactly where is this written?

I had a small arguement with my father today on the subject. He thinks that you can use whatever caliber of rifle as long as you are in a W.M.U. where rifles are allowed in S.O. I've heard otherwise. So if this is law, where do i find it written in the provincial hunting regulations? Or are they municipal regulations, depending on the region? Anyone got a link?

It's not like it was a heated arguement or anything. We just want to know so that if we ever hunt deer in S.O. again, and we're allowed to use a rifle, that we have the right caliber of rifle so that we won't get charged. Can anyone help me out on this subject? Especially with a link to where this may be law. I don't know which of us is wrong or right on this subject but i want to get it cleared up so there is no misunderstanding in the future. Thanks Guys.

Page 71 of the MNR Hunting Regulations for 2010-2011

The holder of a small game licence may not use a rifle of
greater calibre than .275, except a flintlock or percussion
cap muzzle-loading gun, for hunting small game in
the counties of Brant, Elgin, Essex, Huron, Lambton,
Middlesex, Northumberland, Oxford, Perth and
Wellington and the regional municipalities of Chatham/
Kent, Durham, the former regional municipalities of
Haldimand-Norfolk and Hamilton-Wentworth, Halton,
Niagara, Peel, Waterloo and York and the City of Toronto.

Actually if I recall correctly here in essex county, nothing larger then a .270 in leamington kingsville and the town of essex and tecumseh adopted nothing larger then .243. Windsor and Lasalle both have zero discharge.
 
how is a 270 safer then a 308 .the laws are there for safty in controled hunts we can only us shotguns for deer here becoues every body is out hunting the same week .it wqould not matter if it was a 270 or a 308 i would not want o besatnding any wewre down range of 8 or 10 guys that are bloking a bush waiting for deer to be pushed out .even though we can only us a shotgun for deerwe can us a 270 for yotes when the deer season is closed .most areas that have a rifle season for deer are open to cal of choice
 
Clearly in the regs as pointed out. For small game only. Deer season is based on WMU's. As far as 275 vs 308, u gotta draw the line somewhere.

Bylaws are a different cup of tea. And not many police agencies enforce bylaws.
 
Thanks for the replies guys. I hunted deer for about 10 years around the Napanee area and it was always shotguns/muzzle-loaders/bows. Unfortunatly, my Uncle has since sold his farm and we don't hunt deer at all anymore. Thanks for clearing this up for me. I didn't know it was on small game only.

I just spoke about this with my uncle as im looking at getting into hunting and i asked him about me using a .308 , and he says he sees lots of people with .308's and that he and his hunting party have used them in the past.

Hes a life long hunter as well so i trust his judgemental

the OP was asking about southern ontario, not Kingston.

If your uncle is in a WMU that allows rifles for deer, he's not in one with a restriction. The WMU's that DO have a small cal restriction, don't have rifle seasons for deer, only shotgun/muzzleloader or bow.

This regulation is for small game only

Don't ever shoot deer with 270 if you are in Shotgun/ Muzzleloader WMU's
Deer season has overlapping Bear season too and small game for all year
So you can carry a rifle under or upto .270 but can't hunt deer in SO,
Better you clear it with your hunting party
 
You tell this to your local C.O. when he stops you to check your firearms! I imagine your rifle and the rest of your hunting kit will be the property of the crown pretty darn quick! But hey no "life long hunter" would ever be ignorant or disobey the law!

The law is stated as the holder of a small game tag due to the fact that there is no rifle season for anything else in these areas, therefore no other rifle season period in these WMU's so for all purposes here, NO Caliber larger than a .275 can used in these WMU's. I would much prefer the advice of a C.O. than anyone else so maybe if this is in question, give em a call!

That's what I do, we're paying for our hunting licenses, the MNR will talk to you, and are generally pretty quick at answering
 
I am in a WMU 65. It is a Shotgun/ML only zone for deer. There are NO caliber restriction for small game here.

Do not try to relate the different seasons (Deer vs small game).

The .275 rule applies to very specific Counties/Municipalities:

Brant, Elgin, Essex, Huron, Lambton,
Middlesex, Northumberland, Oxford, Perth and
Wellington and the regional municipalities of Chatham/
Kent, Durham, the former regional municipalities of
Haldimand-Norfolk and Hamilton-Wentworth, Halton,
Niagara, Peel, Waterloo and York and the City of Toronto.

Not if there is an open gun season for deer/bear/moose.
