I am looking at possibly buying one of these, as I just have to get back into running that surplus 7.63 x 39!

I am just curious to how it functions with the surplus and how accurate it can be?

I have read alot of conflicting stuff online, and am looking for some actual experiences!

Thanks
Mark

I bought one about two years ago. my mini thirty had issues with failing to fire surplus ammo. it looked like the firing pin was too weak for the hard primers. my SKS and CZ858 would eat up the same ammo with no problems, but 1 out of 3 shots from my ruger would fail to fire with surplus. with regular ammo, the ruger fuctioned flawlessly. i found that non-ruger mags do nothing but jam too. i ended up selling my mini. i have been considering a mini 14 though!

edit: forgot to mention accuracy was horrible...even with non surplus ammo. definently buy a CZ858 before a mini thirty.

I bought one about a month ago. First time out it hated surplus ammo light strikes etc, second time out zero problems it fired all the surplus I put through it. You can get a heavier hammer spring that can help with the harder primers, I picked one up but haven't installed it. The factory mags work fine, haven't had a problem, there are 20 round factory mags for the 30 although I haven't found any here yet. It seems to be as accurate as my CZ and is more accurate then my SKS plus its easier to scope. I find it the fastest to clean of the bunch. Any of the above guns are great and will work well for you.

I have had two, one stainless and one blued. Never jammed or failed to feed. One was minute of barn accurate, the other was quite accurate considering the ammo and the type of gun.

Go for it. I would get a stainless one though.

I as well have the stainless Mini 30. I only have shot factory hunting loads out of it. I find it accurate for the type of gun it is. I use it on deer when dogging. It's no tack driver thats for sure but for the most part will shoot
2-3" groups @ 100m Fun gun to shoot and it's reliable. it' has never jammed and is really easy to clean. I like it! Thats comming from a guy who loves Sako's:eek:

Make sure you get the new "500" series Mini. The new Mini is alot more accurate BUT you are wanting a Mini-30 AND using CHEAPPP surplus ammo so your groups will be not much better then with a $200 SKS. If you want a Mini get a Mini-14 thats in .223Rem or 6.8 and THEN you will have a nice accurate gun :)

at the range a while back came across a guy shootin one of them he was mad at gettin ripped on a case of ammo he bought (surplus 1992) seemed 1 or 2 every mag wasnt fireing ... long story short , the miss fires worked in my sks and so does the case of ammo i bought from him for 100 bucks ...lol:ar15:

Hey guys, first post here... I'd have to agree with Calum above. I have owned a Mini and it was totally unreliable. The CZ/VZ is a much much better option and the mods yu can do to it are super cool!

Mini-30

I dunno about the Mini-30, but I CAN say for a definite fact that the new Mini-14 can shoot very sweetly.

I used to have a Mini-14 Target. Now that gun could not shoot worth a damn. With lighter pills, including 40's, 50's and 55's...they were literally all over the map, no matter what I did to the dampener. Heck I had to put threadlock into the dampener screws to keep them from coming loose (I adjusted so much).

But my wife loved shooting the mini, so I bought a brand new one (2010 model, range, blued in .223). Wow, what a difference a few years and a re-designed barrel can do. The mini-30's have the re-designed barrels as well, so I think they would be awesome shooters. At least you know the bolt and mechanisms will be tight and well within spec.

Mine has never jammed and worked flawlessly. Incredible actually.

I will not let mine go, and it is one of my favorites...next to my M14 and Remy 700 Varminter.

:D

I have one, it is a great little bush gun, but if all you want to do is pour cases of surp ammo, definately go with the CZ858, you can get the gun and a case of ammo for less than a new mini thirty. Or even an SKS - it will shoot as good as the mini. If you do get the mini 30, you will need to get a new firing pin and spring, (I may be incorrect on those parts), but I have had a couple FTF's because of the hard primers in the surp ammo.
It is a fun ###y little carbine, but I certainly would spend my thousand bucks on something else. I was just lucky to have it handed down to me.

I don't understand why the US barrel manufacturers
didn't jump on this opportunity and produce
some exchange or retrofit barrels (that are made correctly)
that make the old mini-14's shoot decently.

mini 30's can shoot

the mini 30 can shoot, just dont expect it from the cheap surplus ammo.

this one just got sold. i'll tune up another one day.

I have an SKS, CZ-858 and a stainless mini 30, all bought this spring. Of the 3 I shoot my mini 30 the most, because it is scoped. I burned through 1 1/2 cases of surplus this summer (between the 3 rifles) and didn't have a single shell not detonate. The mini 30 chewed through almost a case of ammo itself without modding it.

I dont think the mini 14 will take 5.56 only .223, i could be wrong. I personally own (looks like many others on the board as well) an SKS and a CZ858 and have never had a problem punching out volumes of cheap eastern European milsurp ammo.Mini 30 looks niice, but for the price???
