Broke down and bought a Bul M-5 1911 in .40cal from Marstar. I wanted a 1911 platform that wasn’t in .45acp so I am not worried about brass, plus I shoot reloaded ammo and .40cal is almost as cheap as 9mm.

Marstar shipped the gun within 10 days, came in the standard plastic box with 2 mags, instructions and a nifty little cleaning kit.

The gun cycles nicely and the trigger is smooth, the action is pure 1911 series 70, however the barrel does not have a bushing and it has a full length guide rod. While researching the gun, I have seen article that says the gun uses Chip McComerick parts. The finish is nice and although the frame is polymer, inside is a Stainless steel insert with full length rails. The gun is quite solid.

Took her twice to the range, this gun shoots POI and easily digested RN,JHP,SWC. I shoot 155gr XTP’s 180gr Remington UMC JHP and Nolser 135gr JHP. The Noslers proved to be the most accurate, which I have noted with all my .40cal guns. The only stoppages I had is with a cast bullet where the OAL is a tad long for the match chamber. The sights are easy to pick up and they don’t snag.

The downsides:
The only niggling flaw with the gun is the end of the safety protrudes slightly past the frame and can dig into the web of the hand.

The other 2 issues are mags and holsters. This gun is slightly wider in the frame than a regular 1911, making any fitted holster to tight, I tried a Tagula thumbreak, Serpa and Gould and Goodrich IWB and they are all to tight. Currently I am using a Bianchi and Tagula yaqi style rig.

Mags are pinned at 10 rounds and are quite nice, the problem is that Marstar does not have any in stock, the only option is STI mags at double the price.

nice review thanks. I have been considering one of these as well and any info I can get is appreciated.

do you have any pics of your groupings?

Some IPSC shooter have these guns at my club and I think they have modified Para mags to work in the Bul.

The gun groups nicely when i do my job, I was not doing my job hence no pictures of the grouping....

I have an M-5 in .45ACP. With factory ammo, my gun shoots amazing. However, I can not seem to get it to cycle handloads. Loads that cycle in every other 1911, the round wont chamber. I am also having an issue finding mags. Other ten that, I love the gun.

You need to shorten your OAL on your reloads, as it is a match chamber. I dropped mine tonite to the min OAL and that should do it.

While you did say the action is 1911 Series 70, could you describe the trigger feel a bit more? Is there any pre-travel? Does it feel like a Nighthawk's trigger, or more like one on Norinco's? ;)
TIA.

A little update
Finally took pictures of the gun disassembled so you can see the insides. You can note the large stainless steel insert in the polymer frame. Also the full length guide rod compressed and held into place with my special tool (modified paperclip) I just swapped out the extended blued safety for a cut down extended Stainless safety. Another interesting tidbit I noted is that the slide is notched for a standard bushing, even though the gun uses a Bull barrel. I suspect they either get the slides imported into Israel or have a non-bull barrel model as well.

I plan on getting a STI .40cal mag for it, but also experimented with a Norinco NP-30 (double stacked .45acp mag) I had to extend up the notch to fit the release in the Bul and the mag binds a bit about ¾ the way up where it is thicker than the Bul mags, but it feeds fine and no stoppages, just sticky to get in and out. It will do till I get more mags.

So far I have shot Speer golddot 180gr JHP, UMC JHP, handloaded XTP in 155gr and 200gr, Nosler 135gr JHP's, 180gr ball and 2 different 170gr cast SWC. All work well.

Found that my Tagula thumbreak holster for my Glock is a good fit for this gun, who would have thunk!

The Trigger is very nice, as good as any top name 1911 I have shot and far better than a stock Norinco 1911.

I shortened the OAL and the gun feeds all my handloads effortlessly.
