I remember someone once posted a similar question a while ago, but I wasn't able to find the thread.
After just dropping $1000 on 7.62x54R ammo for my M44, I came to the realization that I need to find a bolt action milsurp rifle that shoots the ever so cheap 7.62x39 ammo (I just can't get interested in non-milsurp firearms). I got an sks, but for the shooting I do, I prefer the bolt action rifles. Anyone know if such a rifle was ever in service?

No Milsurp bolt guns in 7.62x39 I'm aware of - Norinco's JW-103 is the cheapest you'll find at around $280. Marstar gets these in periodically. CZ made one, Remington too I think. They're pricey.

Find a Yugo SKS. Gas shutoff for the grenade launcher lets you run it like a straight pull bolt =)

There was some Arisakas converted to 7.62x39 by China's Arsenals just after WW2 but I never have seen any on civilian market

Most eastern block honor guards use SKSs. What they do to make the manualy operated is simply remove gas piston, it make an SKS into stright pull rifle

The Chinese also produced a single shot Mosin Nagant M44 aka M53 in 7.62x39 mm, but they are rare collector's items.

Thanks for all the imput guys. I didn't get the answers I was hopin for, but at least now I know what direction I'm headin in. I'm goona try my sks with the gas piston removed next time I'm out shootin. And I gotta learn how to reload my 7.62x54R! Although havin one of those converted Arisakas would be cool too. Thanks again

I seem to recall hearing about some rare 7.62x39 M38's but cant remember where or who. The M43 cartridge was developed near the end of WW2 right? Which was when bolt action high powered rifles were being phased out for semiauto medium power rifles to better suit to closer ranges encountered in most battle scenarios. I know Numrich makes a 7.62x39 barrel for mausers and you can get chamber adaptors for .308 win and .30-06 springfield rifles, but feeding issues as well as the case head being compatible with the bolt may arise. I'd love a nice bolt action 7.62x39 rifle but wont shell out the $850 for a CZ. defeats the purpose of buying cheap milsurp ammo IMO

Cheap in both senses of the word - just isn't up to the kind of accuracy you would demand out of a bolt gun with that kind of price tag.

My Lady's CZ 527 bolt action shoots 1 inch groups at 100 yards with czec surplus m43 ammo, and 1/2 inch groups with PRVI soft points, only noting that the PRVI is loaded a bit hotter and the groups are raised from the surplus ammo.

The CZ is worth every penny spent. Its manufactured standards are many times higher than Norinco junk. The "cheap" ammo gives her thousands of rounds of practice loads with good accuracy, then switches to the soft points during hunting season or shooting matches.

I don't know about every one else, but I'd love to shoot accurate rounds all day long with my 30.06 or 300 Mag, but the price is just not anywhere close to surplus x39 ammo.

I believe Australian International Arms made bolt action rifles some years ago chambered in 7.62x39.Current production is 7.62x51 only.It might be tough finding one for sale as I don't think there were a lot made.
