recommend me a 1911

I'm trying to find a 1911 for myself and have thought of things I'd like to have in a pistol:
-no fancy finishes (flat black pistols preferred)
-compact model would be a plus (commander?)
-must be able to feed all sort of reloads without tons of stove pipes and FTF's
-either easy to find replacement parts, or so durable that replacement parts would not be needed for a long time.


I'm kind of thinking of a no nonsense battle pistol..

Anybody know of a make and model like this?

It's hopeless to ask a question like that here mate... everybody is just going to reccommend the gun that they own.


That said, you should definetley get a Kimber Custom Target II. :p

You want a commander length 1911. Fair enough. I prefer the Commanders myself and have owned a few. I agree with most of the posters when they say to go with an Armco tuned Norinco. Cannot beat this gun for the money. period. And really, the next step up in a decent commander is around $1200 for an STI Ranger II or even one of the cheaper Kimbers.
 
Sounds like everyone thinks the norinco will give me the reliability I am looking for if tuned by armco....
And I love the price point! I think that may be the way to go...

It's hard to go wrong with a Norinco tuned by Gunnar! And it leaves lots of money left over for ammo. And if you're shooting .45 ACP, the ammo cost adds up pretty quick! ;)
 
The Norinco is it for the money. They shoot just fine out of the box. If you are just starting out you don't need all the bells and whistles yet. Just play with the gun for a while and if you like it trick it out later.
 
Budget: Armco tuned Norinco; have Gunnar add any extras you might want.

Mid-grade: Colt, Dan Wesson RZ-45 Heritage.

Top of the Line: Springfield Armory Professional. These are built by the Springfield Custom Shop for the FBI. This is as close as it gets to a current production "no nonsense battle pistol" aside from a real MEU(SOC) 1911.

Custom: Dlask's base model starts at $1,250. This might make it a better alternative than any of the mid-grade production guns and you have the chance to get it set up the way you want.

Generally speaking, the 1911 tends to be most reliable in its original 5" .45 ACP configuration. A lot of the 1911s on the market come with what I would consider undesirable features, such as full-length guide rods, front slide serrations, and firing pin block safeties (the Series 80 is the least bad of the lot).

All you truly need is reliability, good sights, and a good trigger. All the rest is gravy.
 
only option at under $1k is a Norc Commander. the sights on it SUCK!!! they're HUGE ugly pieces of plastic, make the gun look like a POS. the insides are rough, but can be cleaned up easly if you're mechanically adept. mine doesn't feed SWC all that well for one of two reasons - either the reloads are too light in powder / the recoil spring is too heavy to properly toss the slide ALL the way back for a good forceful chambering, or the feed ramp doesn't like the SWC profile and causes it to hang up. both are "fixable".

i'm going to compare my Norc to a friend's SW1911 (Gov't) and see what the $$ difference gets me (you). personally, SO FAR, i'm glad that the Norc was only $350 or so and not more, cuz i'm not crazy about it.
