any ideas how to get into the locked buying forums?

Its done via the CP.

1. Go to your UserCP,
2. Click on Group Membership,
3. Select Join Group for Equipment Exchange Users Group and,
4. Click Send.

Takes a day or three to get approved. Details and rules are here.
