Realistic yet stupid question

I need help in convincing my parents to be my reference for pal. Most importantly, I am going to be living in a dorm room in a university located somewhere in London (guess which university). How can I convince them about the storage problem? (I have no idea how to resolve it) The third question is to convince RCMP that I am not some crazy school shooters because I live in a dorm room. Rcmp's reaction: Why would a guy living in a dorm wants a pal?
LOL

RCMP wont look at address (I don't think). Its none of their buisness where you live.

For PAL referernces it can be anyone, not necessarily your parents. When I got my PAL I got two of my friends to be my references. Both where called and asked questions about me, but for the most part it was very straightforward. I'm pretty sure you can find a couple of highschool friends who arn't known felons to vouch for you :p

What problem you might run into is trying to store your firearms on campus. The university might have rules and regs what you are and arn't allowed. For example I know some Ottawa schools banned hot plates and cooking stoves in res buildings. What you could do to solve the storage issue is get one of the Canadian tire stack-on cabinets and stick it in your closet. Its not the best 'safe' in the world, but it does add to privacy. Because I would be paranoid keeping firearms on campus (paranoid of University officials, not so much of students) I would go way above and beyond the storage laws and also trigger locks on everything.

I would also suggest keeping the lid on the fact you have any firearms in your dorm room. The last thing anyone needs is some crazy nutter start screaming about a gun, swat team rolling in, you losing your collection, and giving Wendy Cooky air time about how the guns were seconds away from going on a rampage all by themselves.

That being said, I wish you luck.. And welcome to the club :D

Hi. You won't be allowed to have firearms in the dorm. Western's policy. Not even a cap gun. No knives or explosives either.
A safe/lockable cabinet, at home, that Mom and Dad don't have access to is pretty much you're only option. Unless you know somebody here. Same conditions if they don't have a PAL.
"...Why would a guy living in a dorm want a pal?..." The answer is, "Why not?"
"...crazy school shooters..." They generally don't apply for permits.

Get the PAL. If your parents won't sign as references, get someone else to be your references.

For storage, a lockable cabinet at your parent's place if they agree, or storage at a friend's place. You can lend longarms to anyone who is a PAL owner, so they could store it for you.

There's nothing wrong with applying for a PAL if you live in a dormitory on campus. RCMP will not stop your PAL based on your address alone.

How can you cook without knife?

The problem is I am from BC, I don't have any friends in London!

Not in Dawson College shooting and V tech! LOL

Ummm...I hate to be a wet blanket here but, if his parents wont be a reference they obviously don't want him to have guns. How do you think they are gonna react to him storing firearms in THEIR house.

They mean hunting/folding knives, you know, stuff not exactly for cooking. Stupid rule, I know.

Do you know anybody else besides your parents for 3yrs +? All you have to do is email them the pdf form, get them to fill out the reference section and have it mailed back to you. That's a cost of about $0.57.

As for storage, well, it's simple, not on campus, you'll need to find someone with a PAL to keep em, or keep it at your parents home in a cabinet/safe.

Otherwise, I would look into joining a London gun/shooting club quickly and make friends and I'm sure someone would store them for you.

A longshot would be seeing if a local gun shop would hold on to it for you, but it might cost you.

This one's simple really.

Don't list your university dorm address as being your permanent address. It's not anyways. Your permanent address is still your parents house as long as you're a student, so, all communication should be going to that address.

You can't store your gun on campus (as I think you already know), however, I'm assuming you have a place to shoot nearby. I'd suggest having a friend at your local range store the firearm for you (assuming we're not talking about a restricted firearm here). Then it's close enough for your shooting purposes.

As already mentioned if your parents won't be your references, find two other friends. Coworkers, classmates, friends. They only need to have known you for 3 years.

Now you've ruled your parents out completely, and aren't breaking any laws.

You don't need a place to store firearms just to get a PAL. A PAL also lets you borrow firearms. Knowing that you're only going to be borrowing firearms until you have a place of your own to store your own, your parents will probably sign off for you.

Your situation sucks and is inconvenient.

Regardless, all you'll have to do is ask you parents to reference you. If they don't find someone else you've known for 3 years....And store future firearms at their house, if they won't let you, keep them at the gun shop on consignment for a price nobody would buy. :D

Good luck!

Cheers,
Sand

Right, if they actually refuse to be his references. The way i read it he's still trying to convince them. Moot point anyway as it turns out they are in BC and he is going to school in London, Ont,. although he could still shoot during summer and holidays if he goes back to BC.

Storage

It may also be possible to store the guns at the shooting club. Apparently some clubs do allow storage. Don't know if this is true or not, but worth a try.

silly questions:

we're assumining this is long-guns ONLY and not handguns, right?
when will you have time to shoot?
will you afford the ammo?
will you have a car? if so, can you store the stuff in the car?

I would strongly suggest finding an alternative to having any firearm on campus in your possesion. You face losing pretty much everything related to your enrollment. I can all but guarantee you your school has a rule against storing or even having any firearm on campus.

Don't list your university dorm address as being your permanent address.
My parents emigrant to Hong Kong so...
Renting a storage locker could work for storing them.
But I am new to London!

Both long guns and handguns
I will have time to shoot when I finish my homework
I don't know the price of ammunition so I can't answer your question.
I don't have a car. In fact I don't have a license!
By the way it is not a silly questions!

ELL - OH - ELL

"Hey Western, I pay rent for your dorm, therefore I am a tenant. So you can kindly go shove your statist BS up your arse."

well 50 rounds of 9mm cost around 12-15 bucks .40 is around 25 bucks. for factory that is.
.22 ammo is dirt cheap and .223 isn't too bad neither is 7.62x39 they are all nice and cheap rifle rounds

Your referances don't need to be canadian either. A guy at my range is scottish and he gave scottish refereances on his pal application and he had no issues so you can list your friends from back home if you want... now don't quote me that i could be wrong but that is what he told me.

I don't know if a storage locker would be leagl but you can always call teh CFC and ask. or hopefully you can talk real sweet to a range and get them to store them for you. you're not without options, but i'd reccommend just borrowing them all for a while. if you don't drive then i'm assuming your flying back and forth to bc. you can transport them on a plane but i'm told it is a HUGE hassel.
