Shot over 700 rds with the kids yesterday 0 FTF or other issues even with the el cheepo 30 rds mags I wish that I could say the same for my buddies SR22. And let’s not even talk about accuracy his SR is not even in the same ball park.

The sights work well however I will have to shim the sight base ¼ to bring it in line with the rail system right now you are with a ½ riser you are 10 inches high with out it you are 10 inches low. My plan is to make a whole new base to have the same lines as a true m4. These cheap ACOG clone works great on this little gun bought from a fellow CGN member for approx 80.00 just on the cool factor alone money well spent.

Can you elaborate a bit more on this? What kind of problems was he having? I am on the fence still but leaning towards a new SR22 myself. Any info would be useful.

So your saying that if I buy that It will fit on my VTR as is?

no, it will not fit . No AR-15 handguard will fit the 597 VTR properly. You can make it to hang there , but the handguard top rail will not be leveled with the receiver top rail . The only quad rail that will level with the top rail on the reveiver is the one made by Dlask.

This is the one that levels with the VTR receiver rail:

True If I want to use the iron sights you will have to shim the back rail 1/4 not to hard to do, I plan to make a whole new back rail when I get a chance If you use a scope who cares

1500 rds down the pipe 0 failure to feed or fire with any ammo I use. I have not even cleaned it and it will shoot 1 inch groupings when braced up at 50 yards. Ok there are sometimes fliers because I suck. One thing though is the Rem 30 rds mags some times do not latch in properly but when they are 0 issues with rapid fire. Stick with the 10 rounder’s 0 issues other then I can’t put more then 8 in at a time. I love this gun

Sounds like a few caveats there.

My boys love the VTR...

We fired over 500 rounds a few fridays back with the VTR and they loved it... so much so, I bought them another 597, just in the Camo with the fire sights.

We had a few jams, however, it was at the beginning of the 30 rounds in the mag. We started putting 25-26 rounds in and not an issue what so ever. I could cut one whole all day long with this thing.

As for the quad rail.... I bought some universal rails from TSE ($12.00 each, I think they were UTG or CAA) and drilled and tapped the factory forearm, screwed them on and done. It looks great.

Gord.

Good way to go and you can spend the money on ammo

New UTG low profile sight

UTG makes a lower profile sight called the 754 just got in the mail will try it out and post the results

Do the extractor and hammer you will be happy you did!

I, too, would like to know the issues your friend was having with his SR22.
Recently I took my sons and daughter out to the range with an SR22 and the VTR. I could tell the same story as yours except it would be the other way around. I replaced the extractor and hammer in the VTR and it works most of the time (much better than out of the box) in terms of feeding and extraction but still has issues with the Remington 30 round mag. Not nearly as much the more it gets used.
The SR22 seems to eat anything without a glitch if I use TI mags or steel lips BC mags.
I would have to say, in terms of accuracy, its a dead heat at the moment. Each gun likes a certain brand of ammo and will shoot it very well.
I like both of them and don't plan on getting rid of either one soon. If I had to choose, however, it would be the SR22 because it is sturdier, has had no issues, is at least as accurate as the 597 VTR and I like the fact you can get the rail for it from Ruger (Snap Shot in Montreal among others) without "level" issues.

Don't get me wrong. If your VTR shot that well without any problems and is accurate, you have a winner there. It certainly looks great with what you have done to it as well. I am just curious about what problems the SR22 was having. :)
