im seriously considering an AR platform to replace pretty much all my rifles..

so ill use it for hunting, target and service ( im in NZ so can hunt )
and would also take top slot as my SHTF gun

im curious though.. as a mud gun, how does the AR perform ?
i always read that "a DI AR will is just as reliable as an AK and m14 etc etc as long as you keep it clean and lubricated properly" which to me isnt reliability

so my question is..

without access to cleaning gear, apart from barrel patches and an oily rag for wiping down .. how long/how many rounds can i expect a DI AR15 to function reliably ? ( my climate is temperate/subtropical forest .. so theres a bit of humidity and moisture )

we can take them hunting etc .. so not really any restrictions

but i can get an AK/Saiga/Vepr in .223 for 1/4 the price of an AR .. and the saiga/vepr's will post a moa group out of the box with alright ammo .. so im trying to find advantages to actually spending 4 times more on an AR :D

Fenix you're trying to convince yourself to buy an AR, and and at the same time trying to find faults so you won't get it because of the price.

You know you want one even if the vepr is cheaper ;) Buy them both :D

I held off purchasing an AR for several years. With the Norc selling for $700, I had to take the plunge.

Very glad that I did.

Reliability has been excellent and so far, 300rds, no cleaning per se. The bore looks as clean as new. I use a synthetic grease and simply wiped off the 'dark' grease and replaced it with more.

I likely put too much on as it doesn't seem to have rubbed off when cycling the action by hand.

Not sure how much shooting you will see when you are in the field but I can say, my Norc M4 will not see any real cleaning for at least another 300rds and then I don't know if it will need it.

I think a light film of Syn grease should keep this rifle running for range use. No idea what it will need if run in very dirty climes.

How many bolt guns go several hundred rds without cleaning?

I don't see you having any problems.

YMMV

Well if you run your AR wet you can get over 1000rds before cleaning "there an awesome rifle and why do you think so many SOF, Army and LE people still use them ;)"

I had many guns before "the AR". I find it's a lot like my 1911, I don't want to shoot anything else and I'm already looking at buying another even though I definitely don't need it. Sometimes I even take it out of the safe just to look at it. It's a sickness.

And if cost is an issue they hold their value very well in case for some strange reason you hate it.

if you're curious why i opted out of getting an AR .. its because a stock standard AR15 and i mean stock standard.. costs us about $5000 .. that would equate to around $3500 canadian
That's a lot of money. What make is this expensive AR? Do you have other options than the SL-8 ? Is Swissarms avail in NZ? Now I do understand your Vepr option.

cant, im in NZ.. if you're curious why i opted out of getting an AR .. its because a stock standard AR15 and i mean stock standard.. costs us about $5000 .. that would equate to around $3500 canadian

so i cant justify it :).. perhaps an SL8 though

WOW, and we worry about pricing in Canada.

That is insane markup.

how come there are no Norinco products in NZ? They would be so much cheaper like what we are enjoying here.

If you can get an HK SL8, you will be thrilled at how well these rifles shoot. Very accurate even way out there.

our laws make it expensive.. on a standard license we can only have thumbhole or rifle stocks on semi automatics..
this rules out 90% of military type rifles

and on the E-catagory license ( military ) we can have any rifle we want, but need to hand in a similar calibre rifle for destruction, as they have a cap.

so handing in a $1500 mini-14 to buy a $4500 AR ..

oh and the ARs are expensive because the few people who do import them as agents whack their markup on it

If I were you I would buy an AR in a heart beat if I could hunt and target shoot freely. The AR is a rifle I will never be with out. Others come and go, but the AR lasts forever!
