In an earlier thred I asked which caliber would be right for me for a varmint gun, Because of price, variety, and the fact that I dont reload (maybe in the future) I have chosen to go with .223, now the question is which rifle to go with.

Once again price is a big matter, I would like to be able to shoot gophers at 150+ yards, coyotes at 200+ but dont plan to be needing to go over 300yrs.

I am trying to keep the cost of the rifle under 600. is this possible/reasonable?

What brands/models do you recommend and why?

Remington Model Seven Predator at LeBarons, in .223, for $674 after club card discount.
i think there is also a $40-100 rebate on most Remingtons right now.

my idea of a varmint gun 6-7 years ago vastly differed from my idea of a varmint gun now. im sick of lugging around ~14lb rifles like my 700P.

lightweight, compact, great action, fluted medium contour 22" barrel.

A very smart man once told me, "You will NEVER regret buying good equipment."

The corollary to that being that buying ####e equipment is a waste of money and you will always regret it.

Spend the dough and get a decent rifle. This is gopher country and throwing hundreds of bullets out into the grass with a cheapo light barreled rifle will get hugely frustrating if you can't hit the little buggers. Go with something like:

Rem 700 LTR
Rem 700 P
Sav 10FP

All those are good, will work well and produce decent accuracy and can be upgraded in the future.

Budget

I would go check the EE and see if you can find something there. Can find some great deals if you are willing to wait. Other than that can't really go wrong with a Savage.

Good equipment is just that, good equipment. If you haven't already, I would suggest going out and getting your hands on some rifles. Find some you like. Then come back and open the floor to member’s experiences with those particular rifles. Then you can make a decision based on a small group of rifles.

This also can let people know what floats your boat so to speak. Then maybe some good solid recommendations can be provided. Otherwise you are only going to get personal preferences and some wish list items of members. That is not really a bad thing as everybody learns from experiences and things they have bought and sold.

In reading your earlier post regarding the caliber selection, you mentioned that you like to shoot. That is great, then all the more reason to get something that is good quality. Now to give some of my biased opinion :p

I would suggest that you look at a Remington 700. Given the ranges you are going to be experimenting with I am not sure that a heavy barrel is important or necessary. Personally all of my varmint guns are heavy barreled. I like the heavy barrel, but like has been mentioned above, it certainly is not for everyone.

Some points regarding the 700: action is smooth and short (as compared to a savage). They run like a top in any weather. I have a VSSF in 22-250, and it shoots like a house on fire.

check out the savage modle 25 light varmit.they come in 204 ruger and 223.if the 223 shoots anything like the 204 the it would be a good one.had a med contour barrel so not as heavy as some of the others.they also come in a thumbhole stock modle as well if that is what you want.

Have you considered the CZ 527 Varmint. Real nice rifle. Has the single set trigger and is very accurate and not too heavy. It's slightly more than $600.00 but well worth the price.

Under $600. is a tight budget. I suggest that you consider a used rifle.

This one is in the EE now: WTS Rem 700 SPS Tactical .223

WTS Rem 700 SPS Tactical .223

Rem 700 SPS tactical in .223 with bushnell elite 3200 3x9 scope. Leupold mounts on scope. Bought new last winter. Fired 300 to 400 rnds at range with it. Nice rifle but a bit heavy for my tastes.
price drop $675

Savage model 12 in a bigger caliber, there is a .243 for sale in the "precision and target rifles " section. It has the accutrigger, i think it was $500 or somewhere around there.

I have a unique problem in order to hunt Coyotes in Nova Scotia out of big game seaon you are restricted to a shot gun shot of no larger than .24 (ooo-#4),or a rimfire rifle of .22 cal.

Look at the stevens model 200 as well. Its an offshoot from the savage rifles and they are very well made and accurate. I got one for under 400 from lebarons and it shoots under 2" off the bench with no mods. I also know of some guys who are buying these as bases from long range rigs as well so that should tell you something. Only issue with them people have are the stocks. I dont think they are too bad but they are not the best, aftermarkets are available as well though.

I hear ya.

How is the model seven?? Is the stock a typical remington SPS?? I've thought about it.... but havn't talked to anyone about them.

x2 Solid well built rifle.

x3 mos def. Have it in .223, winchester 40rd. varmint pack JHP works beautifully in it. You have to be patient with the qickly overheating #2 barrel tho... That aside, i have the target to prove it's capable of 1/2" 3-shot groups at 100 with those winchester JHP...

I was looking throught the EE and came across a TC encore, with .223 and 30-06 barrels. $800 with 30-06 and $600 with 223, or $1000 with both .
is this a good deal???

What are your thoughts on the TC encore????
Will it produce the accuracy I am looking for???
