45-70 bolt gun

I had a No.4 MK1 rebarreled to 45-70.... it works. . Got a new magazine for it too, not sure how difficult it is to modify the existing magazine.

About recoil, Im still using the brass buttplate....its more a push than a kick when Im standing up but then again...im not trying to make into a 458 win mag.

I have a 22" stainless barrel . I find myself using the flip up sight to get proper sight in . Ill have to get the front sight changed so I can use the main peep on the receiver.

Im still in the early stages of load development so far.....will be carrying it for the Black Bear fall season.

Hi I have 45-70 built on a Siamese mauser action. weighs close to 9.5lbs and although it lets you know when you touch one off I find recoil to be tolerable. I am shooting 400 grain Woodleigh weldcores at and avg velocity of 2080fps.

Should make a fine bear gun

Damn, Pathfinder thats a beauty bush cannon.
You gotta tell us more about the build. What barrel?, magazine?, how'd you make her feed?, approximate costs? any difficulties?.
I feel another build coming on.

I didnt' build it myself......Not sure what the make of the barrel is, I was told the magazine is offshore make (phillipines or something - but could be from the Navy arms conversions in the states) I guess I have about 500$ into the conversion.

The only difficulty so far is extraction....but its getting better..will need some more polishing. At least it feeds well and shoots well so that's half the battle.

I dont' know why 450 Marlin or 458 American would be any better. 45-70 brass is widely available and for some time to come.

That is a very pretty rifle, and keep it in 45-70! There's many advantages to that caliber that can't be had with 450 Marlin or 458 American.

why not look for a Ruger No.1 in .45-70?

it will also let you work up hotter loads than you would be able to in the typical levergun or an Enfield based build.
there is something particularly cool about a single-shot falling block in something like .45-70.

^just use lower rings than this guy :)

I just got a Win P14 in a lot I bought. The build is interesting. I have a Ruger#3 in 45-70 and recoil won't be any worse than it. :) I think the next build might be of a rolling block from Trade Ex. Go for the build. There are lots of "every day" guns around & it's nice to shoot something different. Ps If you want recoil, try a heavy load with 500 gr bullets in the 45-70. Have fun, that is what it's all about. AJ

I dropped the P14 at my gunsmith today. We discussed a few things and it basically boiled down to this.

She'll have a 18.5" barrel of medium contour. The shank on the P14 is quite thick so the barrel is going to be pretty meaty, it's going to be around 7/8ths" thick at it's thinnest point. Twist will be quite fast for the heavy bullets, around 1/14 to stabilize them right. Blued finish, good quality barrel.

All that's left is to wait for his phone call. The issue with this gun rests on it's ability to feed the different caliber from the magazine. It's going to be a touch and go process, and if he manages to do it without much work, it will be cheaper and I'll be able to buy the reamer he needs to make it a 45-90 chamber. If getting it to work is a big hassle, I'll have to pass on the 45-90. I could have it reamed to 45-110 or so but then there would be a LOT of room before the bullet hit the lands and that can be problematic down the road.

Question here. If any of you guys have P14 in 45-something, has your magazine been shortened so the rims don't jump over each other during recoil? My gunsmith says it could be a problem if I had it worked in 45-90 and was shooting 45-70 out of it.

Well hopefully that works out for you.

I playing aroud with some 410 shells this weekend and found that they feed fine from the magazine and cycle fairly well because of how the rim was quite close to 45-70. Unfortunetaley the firing pin doesnt' seem to go far enough out to ignite those primers (im getting a pin strike mark on the primer but I guess not quite enough) unless I have a bad batch of 410 Ammunition.....no big deal, at least Im shooting the 45-70 handloads reliably now without issues.

That's typical. It's because your firing pin doesn't protrude far enough. Try using 45-90 brass for shot shells with a duplex powder. The plastic wad in a commercial shot shell will spin in the rifling and produce a horrible pattern. Paper works better as the rifling just shreds it.

410 slugs would do nice
