Best cartridge for Light Mountain Gun

Get yourself a Remington 600 action, screw on a .284 barrel and put it in a Brown Precision stock. Add a Light Leupold scope and with the 5 1/2 pounder, go hunting, .........the perfect sheep rifle. If you really believe this is too small a caliber, go for a .30-.284, ....still flat shooting!!!

Sold all my 7X57 Husqvarnas, so now mine is a 30-06 Husqvarna 1640 in a Brown Precision Pounder stock. :)

A magazine full (5) of 160s at 2850 fps shoot into less than five inches at 300 meters, and is plenty flat for anything I am going to be hunting. As well, a few 200 gr Partitions in a pocket is a nice security blanket!

IMHO, one could put on a blindfold, spin around until dizzy, and point towards a line up of 10 different "mountain rifle" chamberings. Highly likely that all would perform well.

Sure sounds good, Ted.
I was thinking too, that the Husqvarna lighter model, that had the word "Husky," on the barrel, straight off the shelf of the mid 60s, in 7x57, 270 or 30-06, would be hard to beat for a mountain rifle. Provided it had a scope on it that wasn't half the size of the rifle. My present day choice would be a 1/1½ to 4 or 5. I say present day choice, because if I could have any scope on my mountain rifle, it would likely be a fixed 3x power Lyman Alaskan.

Had a 700 Titanium in 30-06. Recoil was minor, even with heavy bullets and hot loads.

I now carry another 700 Titanium in 260 Rem. Under 6 lbs with mounts, scope, sling, and 4 rounds. Intended for sheep, but plenty of punch to drop an elk or moose. Recoil is very light, like shooting a 223.

If you can handle the kick and want short action, any of the WSM's will do the trick. If you want something a bit softer shooting, anything on the .308 or .284 cases from 6.5mm on up should also work well as long as you use appropriate bullets and shoot true.

Don't laugh! try carrying a mdl 94 in the mountains; my last dall sheep was taken with a 30/30 model 94 (and a 13 year old 42" plus dall is quite a trophy for the old gun)

280 Rem has worked very well for me, but I'm running my new 7mm Rem Mag after Mtn. goat, elk and maybe sheep this fall. Either way, the high BC .284 bullets cut wind well, making those [not so unrealistic] 500 yard + pokes easier. The long ranges is also the reason I prefer these long action rounds over the short .308 family. I now want to run the 7mag because it pushes my preferred heavy, high BC bullets at 3000 fps, with which I am more comfortable when elk and moose are on my hit list or long pokes are in order.
