So, about me... My name is Dustin, I live in the very restrictive state of California... I own a few different firearms and am interested in gunsmithing.

I actually joined because I noticed someone refer to this site as CGN, which being in California I'm used to CGN = CalGuns Network which is a site much like this one that try's to protect our firearms related rights in the State of California.

Anyway... So I saw a link to Canadian Gun Nutz, and because I am curious as to what gun laws are like in Canada... AND I thought I would sign up and look around.

Good times!

Hello and welcome. I moved here (born here) from the US in 2006. There are great differences from the US in gun laws here. The major one being that with no Second Amendment, there is no legally provided right to own firearms, and government regulation can be whatever the government believes is necessary. In most places, it seems to me, it's not really too bad, BUT there is an absolute prohibition against handguns in .25 and .32 calibers, and with barrels of less than 106mm (about 4.2") in length (unless you were able to be grandfathered in -- I am not). This is not only arbitrary, but also pointless. And it is annoying. And there is basically just no handgun carry provision for private citizens in Canada. Also annoying. But gun licensing is federal with only some variation province to province, and there is in my opinion a good testing procedure for licensing that stresses safety. There are regulations that require pretty stringent storage of guns and ammunition, but the only part of that I find poor is that it's very difficult to keep a firearm available for home protection. It can be done, but it's difficult. I happen to be one of the few (it seems) individuals who doesn't find registration a problem. I collect certain kinds of fairly odd handguns and believe registration -- in itself -- isn't bad. All in all, it's a system I can live with, although I find aspects of it disappointing. Of course the same restrictions don't apply in the US, but the state-to-state variation (I lived in five) can be fairly startling at times. And by the way, this kind of discussion at this site is usually carried out in the General Firearms Discussion or Legalese forums. Enjoy the site.

Hello. Actually Canada's handgun laws are in some ways less restrictive than California's. No thumbprint at purchase here, for example. We also have a waiting period on handguns and other restricted firearms, not through legislation, but through a bureaucratic choke hold.

You can forget about concealed carry here. But the same is true in lots of California.

Indeed... From all the reading I did last night it seems that in some ways California is more restrictive and in others Canada. I find it very interesting, because I think that California is kind of going in the same direction as Canada (only it's taking a very long time).

I do hope that I'll be able to get my CHL (CCW) here after November. Right now, it's impossible with the current Sheriff... But, in November we will be electing a new one, and the other candidate is very Pro-CCW. So with any luck in a few months I'll be able to get one. But, we gotta get that new Sheriff elected first :p

Well In the past I've told myself I just don't spend enough time out of state... And normally when I am out of state I'm on private property so I can carry anyway.

However, More recently (~6mo ago) I changed my mind and scheduled my required training for a Utah CCW.

I still want a California CCW because makes gun ownership in California a little easier, cheaper, and safer.
  • I would be exempt from having to maintain my HSC (so i get to save some cash and time)
  • Some gun stores and Pro-Gun stores (EX: certain coffee shops) in my area offer discounts to people with CCW's.
  • Well, :) the safety thing is obvious... I get to have a firearm with me when not at home.

What is an HSC?

Sorry... Exempt (lol, I must have been thinking about something else at the time i was typing that)...

And HSC is the handgun safety certificate which is required in California if you will buy, own, or be in possession of (at any time) a handgun.

It's this test that's ~40 questions and asks you about some gun safety stuff, local laws, etc... It's ALL common sense and super easy to do. Anyway, you have to renew it every so often and if it gets lost or destroyed you have to retake the test and pay the $25 fee.

Mine tend to get destroyed a couple times a year because my wallet gets run though the wash. You're not allowed to laminate the HSC or use a copy... So it's the only thing in my wallet that becomes washed out.

For a long time I kept it in one of my hand gun cases, but then if i took a different one, or went to the range to rent a gun I didn't have it so I had to retake the HSC right there..

Anyway, with CCW's they normally come laminated... If your CCW does not come laminated you are allowed to have it done... Also a copy is usually acceptable to use.

Hi. CA is actually more restrictive than our studid laws. Only Federal laws to deal with up here too. Provinces and municipalities don't get to make their own. Mind you, the Provinces get to administer the laws, so there are a bunch of differences applying the same law.

I suppose... Still, as I see it we're all brothers fighting the same fight and I think we can all learn from each other.

Welcome. I have been on a couple U.S. forums. Great bunch of guys. They are allways helpfull with all different question. New products and their experience with them. Lets face it. Some states get guns we only can dream about. AGE

Now THERE"S a novel idea. Discounts to people for carrying? Wonder how Wendy *** would like that? Free in-house security.
Yup... There aren't TONS of places doing it yet... But there are a few and the number is growing.

Mostly businesses who's owners support the idea of citizens being able to provide their own protection. Where I live, response times can be as short as 5-10 minutes and as long as well over an hour. It's a huge area the Sheriff's department covers so with their budget it can't really be helped (they do the best they can).

Hi, and welcome to the site. I'm a member of the other CGN too (same screen name). :D

As for our gun laws, it's hit and miss. We don't have the same stupid restrictions on pistol grips and those evil flash hiders, but certain models are outright prohibited (AK-47, G3, etc.). Some items are relatively unrestricted (short barreled rifles and shotguns that are not semi-auto), but others are prohibited (suppressors... :(). We also have universal licensing and registration... :(:( (but hopefully that will end soon ;)).

Cheers,
Ar180shooter

Nice!

Well, I do hope that will end for you guys... And I hope California's version of the same thing AB1810 doesn't pass the California Senate Appropriations Committee... *Fingers Crossed*

I'm sure that it would ultimately be expanded to all firearms... I would cry If I had to register my AR Pistol (work in progress) or Romy G AK.
