Burlington, ON

As to # 2... Wrong.
For example if there's an RSO and another shooter... Both people may shoot at the same time.

I feel the RSO program is a PITA too, but really... In practical terms it only affects range 1 and 4. The IPSC pits (2 & 3) are action ranges where we've only ever had one active shooter at a time anyway.

The club has succeeded since 1956... I think it will continue to do so.

1. The RSO program was dictated by the CFO so if it gets changed it'll have to come from on high.

2. "Crippling Membership"??? Well... the last new member safety class had 30 plus participants...

3. "another range in SWO biting the dust"..? I can't think of any club that has closed because of a membership issue.

Sounds like you're a member, I trust what you say is accurate. Bottom line, if you need to have someone there to shoot, you are forever stuck going with someone, pre-arranging to meet there, or taking your chances and driving there - which as we observed in this thread could be a 2-hour round trip waste of time.

I don't know what constituted implementing those rules, but from a practicality stand-point its got to be one of the toughest set of rules I've ever seen implemented in a club.

GRGC rules are if there are two shooters on the range one is RSO and another one can shoot.

Both can NOT shoot at the same time.

If you come by yourself, you can NOT shoot at all!

It is possible that this rule is interpreted loosely, and for sake of lenience not enforced as stated.

That does not change the fact that rule IS, only ONE shooter at the time if there are two members on the range, other one is RSO and is NOT shooting.

Any further questions, call or email GRGC and they will help you clarify this.

shut up. i never said had to be indoor. litany of demands. seriously. shut the f*** up. i asked for something with pay as you go (or even monthly), not 1:10 minutes away, that i can shoot at within a month.... so please dont comment in this thread if your too lazy to read my post. everyone else thankyou. seriously though dont come back in here.
I read your posts. Silverdale is too far for you. You don't like probationary periods. You want temporary membership when most clubs don't offer them. You whine because Range Burlington didn't answer your emails and phone calls fast enough.

If you're in the Carlisle area Galt would be one of the closer rifle ranges. Even if the rifle section weren't closed I can say from personal experience however that with the attitude you've shown here you definitely wouldn't be welcome there.

Mr "canadiansurvivor" sounds like trouble, we don't need to encourage a disaster into the community for the media to use. For God sakes he mentions his parents are not happy with him owning a firearm, correlate that with his maturity and impatience combined with his ignorance shown on this thread, this smells like a bad apple!

I always encourage new members, but when we have someone that comes out with an attitude of entitlement like this, warning bells start going off.

canadiansurvivor I suggest you at very least show some respect or you will not be survivor very long on this Canadian website, and i definitely will not be welcoming you onto any range!

Peace..

Been reading this thread and picked up some good points on the various clubs to help facilitate my decision

Galt is looking good (if and when Rifle memberships open up, any idea when?)

GRGC also looks like a very nice facility, but the RSO on the line at all times seems like a downfall if i just wanna pop off a couple rounds on a sat afternoon.

Silverdale, nothing but rave reviews, I might have to venture there to see if i can rationalize the long drive.

HAHA & BRRC dont really have what I'm looking for:
-long outdoor rifle range (either 100 or 200 yards), preferably with a metal gong at the end :p
-indoor handgun range so i can at least stay warm in the winter
-trap and skeet aren't a requirement cuz i haven't tried it before, but i'm willing to give em a go

Burlington is only indoor. But don't look past it for rifle. I do all my test work there, load eval, etc. Sighting in is also handy as there is no wind.

Burlington is heated. They put new heaters in last winter, they're freakin' insanely hot.

GRGC rules are if there are two shooters on the range one is RSO and another one can shoot.

Both can NOT shoot at the same time.

Read page 4 of the club rule book under the heading "RANGE SAFETY"

"An RSO qualified member may shoot if accompanied by another member or a non shooting adult. The RSO may not shoot while supervising 2 or more shooters."

So... if there's an RSO and one other shooter then both may shoot at the same time. If a 3rd guy shows up then yes... whoever is acting as RSO has to take a step back and observe.

Sounds like you're a member,

Well actually yes... I'm also a member of BRRC.

Both clubs are fine. They have their own little quirks, but like someone else said no club is perfect.

I get a kick outta the guys that ##### and belly ache about how ####ty some clubs are... Especially the guys that aren't even members of the clubs their bashing.

For anyone not able to find a club good enough for their taste.. I say go start your own. If it's any good maybe we'll all join.

No club is perfect, I'll second that.

Silverdale's relative shortcoming is lack of indoor range, but I accept it for what it is.

Best outdoor facility within reasonable driving distance from GTA.

I explained situation at GRGC, and am standing behind it based on first hand knowledge, and will not discuss it any further.

Galt rifle section has been closed for a while, and I would not be overly hopeful about opening any time soon.

BRRC is reasonably accomodating club for people that have interest in shooting indoors.

I suggest you give it another shot and go there in person.

Before you do that, I also suggest going there with respectful, courteous attitude and readiness/ willingness to learn from more experienced members.

*gets on his soapbox*

As the Rifle Director, I can confirm that BRRC is a rifle club....its the first "R" after all. We just let them shoot pistol from time to time at our club. The 50yard range is not at all limited, provided you have an understanding of ballistics and what your round is doing. Wind doping is a challenge, but we have fog in place of mirage on hot summer nights.

Shooting rifle prone, they are actually quite comfortable. I love shooting in shirt sleeves...in February.

canadiansurvivor I suggest you at very least show some respect

For the record, CanadianSurvivor's PMs to me have been quite friendly and cordial, and he has asked people not to bash BRRC several times in this thread. His response to Claybuster is unfortunate, but its what passes for normal on any 4chan/ED/SA or other hip web site. On many of the non-gun sites I admin, it would pass for polite.

Weren't you supposed to be somewhere, just about 16 minutes ago? ;)

I think people should stop responding to this guy. Only joins in June 2010, 0 trader rating, 20 posts, and he is telling members to "shut up" and "shut the f*** up"? Who is this guy? He is whining. Nowhere can you join a club for only a month. The liability alone for a gun club prevents this. You have to be properly vetted before they will allow you unfettered access. The pay by the hour places assume you are vetted already because most people who use these type of places belong to other gun clubs and already have their ATT's at least in Ontario, but it is harder when it is someone without restricted's since no vetting was involved as there is no ATT. I was considering to take him as a guest for him to shoot his rifle, but I'm afraid he'll tell me to "shut up".

look that guy was making up posts saying i said them and not quoting me. im sorry if cgn doesnt want me here... but this IS the newbie section and if someone doesnt know that there arent any clubs that do monthly memberships nearby that shouldnt be considered whining.

wow . really?

my parents are brainwashed into hating and fearing anything thats sharp or goes bang. they say im old enough to make my choices but they dont want me to shoot on their property. a disaster into the community??? how? i want to LEARN how to shoot. but seeing as im moving soon. i cant do a long membership yet..... thats IT! im not some psycho ignorant a**hole.

EDIT* sucks ive already made so many enemies here, maybe i shouldnt have responded poorly to ONE post, but i was upset people would basically call me a n00b in the newbie section.

Alrighty then, enjoy the sport, and spread it responsibly!

Don't worry man cgn is great, there are a few fudds that think they run the show here, I say ask what you want to ask, no matter how newbish, because that's how we all learn. I think you asked a very good question, too bad the armchair commanders saw it first and made it into a event.

Send me a pm I have memberships at brrc and grrc so I might be able to take you with me as a guest at least 2 times to each one, free!

burlington has this ridiculous rule (besides others) that if you call a gun a weapon you have to put a dollar into a jar and you HAVE to see 6 other disciplines 5 of which you dont give a #### about... and... its a 24 hr club except all decent shooting times are taken up by disciplinary shoot times... so if you dont like heading out at 10 at night with firearms and ammo... its' not the club for you...

guelph you need a shootin buddy... the last thing i wanna do when i head out shooting is start finding some random dude i've never talked to, to hang out with at a shooting club... and then the awkwardness when either one of u finishes shooting and the other one is just left pickin his nose or something...

i know some other member said it in anger... but starting your own club is actually the only rational step as far as i can tell... i will join.

thanks all for the responses! seeing as i gotta move soon, im just going to try to go out shooting as much as i can before i go (wherever that be, silverdale grgc)

but seriously thanks for the advice EVERYONE
