Hi,

I am looking to buy myself a .45 when I get back from theater. I hesitate between three choices and I would appreciate to have the input of the people of this forum as to which choice is the best and, most importantly, why.

- Springfield XDM
- STI Spartan
- Bul M5

They are all in the same price range, same caliber and all have overall good reviews. Glock 22 was ruled out as I dont like the grip of the Glocks...

Your input is appreciated.

Glock 22 is a .40...

Is this your first gun? if it is 9mm would be a better option. Mainly because it's cheaper. Also there seem to be more reliable quality guns in that caliber but maybe it's because I haven't really looked enough...

the new XDm looks pretty cool, but overpriced because it's new and for some reason only one or two dealers bring them in  Also to consider; Taurus 24/7 in .45 and FNP45 both will be cheaper esp Taurus.

I guess it comes down to if you want a 1911 or a plastic gun. I had a PT1911 by Taurus, it was pretty reliable and a good deal for the money.

He is in theater which means he is in the military [and we thank him and all his comrades for their service].
As for the pistols the STI is the only true 1911 for feel. The Bul is a high capacity and will have a slightly bigger hand grip. The Springfield is a totally different beast again. As always only you can decide which feels right to you. STI can be tricked out later with readily available aftermarket parts if you so desire, while the other two not so much. When you get back try to find someplace where you can hold each of them, if not fire them [ideal] then decide which You like.

You don't need to go any further than an STI Trojan in .45 ACP. Superb fit and finish, accurate as hell out of the box, never any problems with FTEs or FTFs, and the best damn warranty and customer service bar none. Enough said.:stirthepot2:

if your going to get a spartan spend a hundred more and get a kimber.

You can get a Kimber for $900?

This is what I would say as well. The Trojan is an amazing gun for the price. STI really delivers. If you want to test the waters for both the .45 ACP calibre and the 1911 platform, you can go the budget route and get yourself an STI Spartan for about $800. It's is not quite the gun that the Trojan is, but is is a fantastic gun for under a grand.

Of the three pistols you have listed, I would choose the STI Spartan. It's a more or less standard pattern 1911 for which parts are readily available.

If you're willing to look at other pistols, the S&W M&P 45 and the HK45 are probably the two best out of the box .45s on the market right now.

+1 for the Spartan got mine a week or so ago and love it! not paying through the nose for a peice so you don't feel like you have to baby it, but still not a cheap gun so you've got a quality peice as well. it begs to be shot over and over again, tolerences are tight. my first 1911 and i couldn't be happier! only thing i wish is for the front strap to be checkered, but grip tape will solve that... and also would like better grips, but i prefer synthetic over wood anyways. the gun plus a few mags from Dlask ( i have 4, function great and dont break the bank) and you've got a lot of firepower for under a grand...

There is a kimber custom ii tle on the ee for 900...buy it because I can't right now and that is a great price for an awsome gun!

Spartans are amazing guns for any price let alone the ~900$ price tag usually on them. quality wise they're extremely close to the 2000$ guns I've seen.

First off thank you for your sacrifice.
Second as military you qualify for the para-usa military appreciation discount.
Do some searches on the boards and you should be able to get the low down (bit of a wait time though).
Cheers

Many of our club members use STI, Kimber or Springfield and don't seem have any problems unlike those Para 1911 style gun. Sti indeed has the best after sale service in Canada.

Just had my new-to-me STI Spartan out on the range for the first time today. I'm pretty impressed. Mechanically tight, excellent trigger and very accurate (if I do my part.)

If you like the idea of the Glock, but hate the way it feels, try the M&P in 45 - it's in the same price range as the Spartan and is an accurate, reliable pistol. The Spartan is the best buy in 1911's right now.

Thanks for the replies.

It seems the Spartan is the favorite choice of CGNers. Thanks for the SW M&P 45 option, it flew below my radar. I now have 4 choices.

I will take the time to test them before buying to make sure it fits my needs.
