.223 for Deer?

a lot of foks forget the fact that the 223 in a milatary round ment to put down targets in the 150 to 225 lb range .out to 300 yards and behond .so why would this not be plenty for deer size game .as most deer shot are in the 150 lb range .thy do work very well if you take thetime to learn how your gn shoots .DUTCH

Has it been a week already?:stirthepot2:

Now all we need are a couple 'ethics' posts and a 'big enough for bear defense' post to round out the week.

:D

FWIW, I can't use a .223 for big game here in Alberta, or I would. With appropriate bullets, and chosen shots.

Cheers

With a proper bullet, no problem! My own personal choice would be the Barnes TSX, but others have been mentioned that will work very well too. Don't forget that many of the "haters" have never tried it! (or seen it tried with the wrong bullets) I have seen a number of deer dropped with 45gr Barnes out of a 22 hornet. (not in SK) I personally have put over a dozen down with a 6PPC and a 85gr Barnes TSX. All one shot kills, and they didn't go far! The 223 will not be much different!

We should have a separate forum here for repeat threads.

1. Is a 223 big enough for deer?
2. Can a 270 be used in Ont?
3. Is CRF better than PF?
4. Is the 375Ruger really the King of the 375s?
5. What's the cheapest good scope to buy?
6. Are FMJs legal to hunt with?
7. Where can I buy a full length mirror to fondle my Tacticool 870 in front of?

If you have a 1/9 twist rifle or faster you can push these swift to 3000fps
the buck will be yours with a shot in boiler room.

Thank you! Two very straight forward answers. I will have to check these bullets out.

I checked a lot of the forums but I couldn't find a good bullet to use for it.

*sigh*

"....223 is illegal to hunt deer with in Ontario..." Nope. Any centre fire is legal in Ontario. There's no mention of FMJ's in either the Hunting Regs or Fish and Wildlife Act either.
"...Weren't the exact answers I wanted..." I believe the point is to use the search function.

Now that we have determined that .223 is enough for hunting deer, the question remains is it enough for deer defense?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Personally I prefer 00 Buck for deer defense. With the charging and mauling and everything, it may be hard to dial down the range on my scope, adjust for windage and acquire the target before it's too late....

I agree that the .223 on deer post are getting old...I think we need more 17 cal for Deer threads;).

There is a good section about this in one of Ackley's Volumes. He said it worked well but was hard on the meat :D
