Scoping my M14 - Rings?

Hi all,

I am putting together my first scoped rifle. I am scoping my Polytech M14. I have bought a quality mount and a decent scope - Bushnell Elite 3200 10x Tactical.

My question is - which set of rings do I buy? I certainly don't want the cheapest but I don't want to spend more than I have to.

I know nothing about scope rings in general (previously, I have been an iron sights only guy) so any help/feedback would be appreciated.

I have to go with what I can recommend in the worst conditions and from what I've seen firsthand.... Leupold Mk 4's.

I used them overseas on my C8, and I also saw alot of DMR M14's in Afghanistan with the same rings and the American's running them seemed to think highly of them as well. Spend the money on a quality set of rings regardless, otherwise that pricey glass goes to waste! In addition, rifles may come and go, but a high quality optic with solid rings can last you a lifetime.

I agree on the rings. Take it to a store and try some rings. Loose the scope on the bottom half of the rings on the rail and chech comfort and your cheek weld. Everyone head is different. I had the leupold low rings on mine and I had a perfect weld with out a riser and the scope was about a hair off the rail - nice and close to the bore is where you want it. After you get your rings, read up on proper mounting. A proper mount - taking your time will give you a trouble free and solid mount. Oh and don't forget to post pics.

Mk 4's are certainly amongst the best. At a cheaper price point I also like TPS and Burris Extreme Tactical. Most of my stuff has TPS rings and I have had no issues but if you want to go even better then Mk 4 would get my vote.

I was going to suggest whatever rings your budget / game/ cool factor look can handle short of buying some no-name zhinese junk (screw heads strip, thread shank snaps) crap that you will regret. Keep it nice and low because the mount will put you high enough. Then you will no longer have a 'cheek weld' but a 'chin weld' and that's not stable enough for precision shooting with your new scope.

Life being perfect.... do you have a reliable and super customer oriented gun shop where you can try out the rings and their height(s) ?

Hope this helps.... let us know which pair you select.

1) The best rings in the world will make no difference if you don;t have the right mount. The only mounts, in my estimation, worth considering are:

a) Brookfield
b) Smith Ent.
c) ARMS18
d) Sadlak (not the aluminum one).

Now on to rings. For really good tactical rings, I can really only recommend two types. If weight is no concern, get ARMS throw-lever No.22's - especially if you want ot quickly be able to revert to iron sights. They hold zero and don't break.

If you don't need to remove them regularly, or if you use a QD adaptor, go with Leupold MkIV rings. If you run a rail, you'll need the high or extra high ones depending on objective diameter. I like the Aluminum ones to keep the weight down - there is no difference in price on the MkIV's between aluminum version and steel. The steel ones are stronger, but I've yet to see aluminum MkIV rings fail, so it's probably a moot point.

You will also need a cheek riser of some sort unless you run a straight-tube (no front objective) in very low scope rings.

Finally, you could also run a chassis system and then you might not need a mount if you get a good solid chassis.

Hope that helps.

Anybody have Burris Zee Rings mounted on an ARMS 18? I am picking up a set for mine, but I find myself wondering if mediums will be ok or will I need high....

*EDIT* I am mounting a Bushnell 3-9x40

PERSONALLY I hate Zee rings. They aren't rugged anough for a battle rifle, though they will work OK if you can get them adjusted properly and you pamper the rifle and never knock the rings about.

The height you need is highly dependent on how your M14 is configured and the diameter of your objective and ocular bells. You need to clear the handguard and also the rear sight unless you remove it form the rifle.
