Hi all. Many years ago I had my FAC and a shotgun that I used for bird hunting, but left the country for several years and it expired. I recently received my new PAL that allows me to possess restricted weapons, because I think I might be interested in pistol target shooting.

I'll be reading this site in an attempt to learn more, because I know absolutely nothing about this sport. But I do have two questions:

Can anyone recommend a good book that covers the basics of handgun selection, target shooting, gun club etiquette, safety, etc.?

Also, I'm looking for a gun club preferably located in Ottawa's west end area. One that I can pay to try shooting without yet owning a gun would be ideal. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Theres no other information that i would give than get out to the closest range . find out when they do their competition practice nights and they should be able to get you out sometime to shoot their guns .

Best thing is you get first hand expereince . Thats what i did , i just watched and watched and got help from many cool members at my club. Theirs IDPA / IPSC nights , ppc , bullseye , and just plain target shooting .

Also youtube. They have alot of informational videos on target shooting specifically IDPA . theres tons of information .

Second piece of advice , do not buy a handgun until youve tried a few of them , that way you dont waste your money on something you dont like and doesnt fit your hand.

Whats a restricted weapon?

A bunch of us have restricted firearms, but no weapons.

Once you find a local club, stop by and ask around if you can shoot some guns. Explain you are new to the sport and don't quite know what you are after. Most will be happy to let you run a few mags through their guns. Offer to pay for the ammo and your set.

Connaught / NCRRA, Wed eve & Sat morn (and soon enough Fri eve, and once you're holster trained Sun morn)

today we had 5 new people show up, no license, just "pay to play". i was practicing my IDPA-related skills with my 2 IDPA guns, my dad came out to shoot a bit of everything, and they were trying out handgun shooting overall. they were right beside me, and went from 22LR up to 44Mag.

get in touch with NCRRA directly or PM me and i can tell you when / where / how / etc.
