I have been reading a lot of the pistols for hunting threads but my needs are a bit different. We breed rabbits and I'm looking for an air pistol that will quickly and humanely put down a rabbit at point blank range. Would the crossman pump pistol from CT fit the bill? I have 22 lr but I live in the city and would rather an air pistol so I can do it in the backyard.

Rabbits are tougher than they look. A body shot from a .22 LR sometimes won't put them down. You want to hit them in the eye or neck, which is not an easy shot with a pistol, but I'd want a .22 caliber pistol as fast as the law allows.

I think you're going to end up hearing a lot of screaming rabbits.

Much easier with a .177 break action air rifle.

"...do it in the backyard..." Probably not a good idea.

Why not? I clean plenty of fish and game there.
I've seen the rabbit wringer before and have thought about buying it, or talking the neighbour into making one. Just figured if an air pistol was powerful enough to do the job it would be a good excuse to buy one.

If it's in your own backyard then the length of the gun shouldn't be an issue so i'd pick up a 2289 for $80, after a few simple mods such as plugging the bleed hole, you will have a .22 pumper that will reach 499.9999 fps which will cleanly dispatch rabbit at point blank without making much noise.

Subsonics .22's are pretty quiet I hear, if you choose the right brand ;)

I've shot a rabbit from 50 yards with a 62 grain 5.56mm bullet. It ran away for 100 feet.

You will not kill a rabbit with a pellet gun, let alone a handgun.

My grandfather used to hunt rabbits with a .22LR to feed his family all the time. It's called shot placement :D

During the depression you had to make the most out of ammo.

Hell he even brought home deer with the same rifle....

Airguns have been used to take out buffalo and other large game.

Aiming for the vitals is key, no matter what caliber you use.

Any .22 traveling 450-490 fps will be enough for point blank work. The 2289 or 2240 get my vote if you're willing to do a little work on them.

Guess all the rabbits I shot as a kid with a Crosman .22 CO2 pistol were in my imagination?Headshot and body................PS a FMJ .223 in a bunnies body takes a while to kill.In the head DEAD.........Harold

Gotta disagree with you on this one Armedsask... Here's a pic of me with rabbits I took with my pellet rifle. Poor suckers had turned white BEFORE the snow flew, BIG mistake!!! Yum yum yum!

Cheers
