Straight out of Full Metal Jacket

Hi all,

I'm a complete noob in the world of black rifles, and I must say I am quite lost in the incredible variety of uppers, lowers, stocks and grips that can all form what is basically an AR-15. I am thinking about getting into it, and will probably get myself a cheap Norc for starters.

But what I really want is an AR-15 that will basically look like a good old basic Vietnam era M16, straight out of Full Metal Jacket(or Apocalypse Now, if you prefer). No quad rail handguard, no collapsible stock, no forward grip, not CQB short barrel. Preferably Colt.

I am not against the idea of getting a used one if they somehow 'don't make them anymore'.

Yep, check the EE and you'll find one with the triangular handguards, fixed carry handle,etc.

The flash hider is the different thing on the SP1 compared to the M16. The SP1 is based on the M16 which the SAS got, but the US Army didn't want. A Vietnam era M16 is what the USAF would have had. You might be thinking of M16A1. Maybe a Nork.

The US military fielded over a dozen variations of the AR-15 in Vietnam, including the M16 (actually kind of rare), M16A1 (most common, by far), XM16E1, several early prototype varieties and several versions of the carbine series. Go check out retroblackrifle.com and look at some of the history and decide if a generic 'Nam look is good enough for you or if you want something specific.

A USMC soldier during the Tet offensive (a la Full Metal Jacket) would have probably had an early version M16A1, though it is possible he could of still been carrying an XM16E1 or even one of the stopgap M16 rifles they purchased several years earlier.

Norinco CQ311 is what you're describing. I think there's one on the EE now.

There was a Colt AR15 a couple of days ago with the A1 type flash eliminator, supposedly early ser number. Second bump and still no takers at about $1200. (I already have one or I would have looked into it).

Never did get the pencil barrel to round out this build.Cheers
