Canadian Rangers - Enfields and .303

The rangers Enfields are a mix match of origin. A few years ago (10?) the CF purchased quite a few from India, and probably several from the UK as well. But I would have to say that the majority are Long Branch made, as we did provide India with quite a few during the war. Member "Riflechair" is a Ranger (I think) and should be able to clarify.

As for ammo, the stuff they use now is all new production made by IVI, who also makes the majority of the CF's ammo.

That's interesting. I had never heard of the Indian Army acquiring No.4 rifles during WWII, let alone Canadian ones. Would it have been just Indian Army units in North Africa and Italy that got the No4, or did they send them all the way out to India for use by units in the Far East (e.g. Burma)?

I've seen the specs for the new rifle. There is one rifle that off the top of my head meets that description. It is the No.4 Lee Enfield. The trouble with the gun business is, will RuRemVageChester care enough to design an archaic rifle just to sell 10000 to Canada?

most recent 303 Br, ammo issue (2006 and later) is made by remington and it is soft point

Sounds like an AIA Enfield to me!

I know that's sacrilage in a Milsurp forum, but they fit the bill, and have all the ergonomics that the Rangers are already used to.

Just completed User Survey.

Now moving on to trials. Statement of requirement is quite detailed, but at a bare minimum includes.

Bolt Action
7.62
Removeable mags
Iron sights with rail for optics

Rifle will be issued complete with hard case, soft case, cleaning kit, 5-6 spare mags, sling etc.

I may be forced to shoot a wide variety of trials rifles at Connaught with unlimited amounts of ammo. Tough job but someone's got to do it.....

And why not just issue the Rangers surplus C7A1's or whatever the nomenclature is? Or is that going to lead into a debate that no one wants to engage in?

Since the rangers "ain't reel soljers, they can't have "military" C7's. WHY they even ELECT their own offisahs!
That they perform military duties is irrelevant according to the politicians.

If its a decent rifle, I am sure the company that will produce them under contract will sell them as "Canadian Ranger Rifles" that are meant for "Military and backcountry use by Canada's toughest infantry" or something like that with a picture of a Ranger (probably not a real Ranger but shh) and a Grizzly in the background in some northern Yukon mountain area.

Maybe something like this but with snow?

If Remington wins out with their M700 platform I know I'd buy one. No Mauser clones for me. ;)

why not just take the auto sear out of c7's and give the rangers the rifle? here in gagetown we dewat alot of c no 7's and no 4 303's. make me pretty sad to do it. today i was talking with a civie in our shop with 40 years military service and he told me not all that long ago the smelters were working overtime smelting, brens, stens, c1's and such. sad i must say.
