Something Ive been wondering, when on patrol or guarding someone/something, if you have something like an aimpoint or eotech, do you keep it turned on all the time just in case?

I seen pictures of this group guarding the gate of a living community in iraq it looked like and it got me wondering. If someone is in the vehicle rushing the gate you wouldn't have enough time to turn their aimpoints on but at the same time, some optics have an auto shut off if left on for too long, and you wouldn't want your batteries to die at the crappiest time.

So anyone have an answer? :D

On duty means ready to go. Off duty means down time. Someone else is ready to go. So, this means reticles illuminated on duty, and shut down off duty. Think about scope caps. Would you be ready to engage with the caps on?

Thats what I was thinking but leaving your recticle on means battery power, and swapping batteries when you might need then is a lot worse than reloading. But Im sure they would have to carry spare sets of batteries just in case. And swap old semi used batteries for brand new ones every couple days even if they aren't dead?

Inquiring minds need to know :D

Most of my friends have leaf optics on deployed period...

I've always known them to run either Trijicons or Aimpoints... The Triji's dont use batterys and the Aimpoint's have such battery life it's just not a concern but are replaced anyway before each deployment cycle.

EOTech -- I just couldn't tell you...

Thanks for the info!

The Eotech 512 model for example, has a battery life with AA batteries of 1000 hours of continuous use so it's not like the batteries would have to be changed as often as you might think.

I dont trust batteries :D

I've had plenty of batteries state that they should last "X" number of hours fail before their time.

thats why you train to shoot an aimpoint like a big ghost ring, and put a paint line on your front sight tower. just in case your optics fails, and you don't have your back up irons deployed. i don't use an eotech so i don't know what they would do. maybe just spray and pray.

BUIS to the rescue.

It is preferable to have a sight which does not depend on batteries.
Sooner or later batteries will fail. It is only a matter of time.
There are quality sighting systems which have illuminated reticles, but which are still functional if the batteries fail.
Backup systems are all very well, but are only necessary because the primary sight has a design fault like dependence on batteries.
Using a sight which has lost its reticle as a ghost ring is a desperation measure, and should be unnecessary.

Get an aimpoint, change the battery when you deploy, leave on for the duration of deployment, come home shoot for a couple years. Then repeat.

IMHO nothing beats an aimpoint.

I just swap the batteries on the EOTech once a week on mefloquine mondays to be sure.

The shutoff on the EO Tech is after about 8 hours, ive never had a problem with it turning off because usually you turn it on in the morning, then have to bring the intensity up in the afternoon and then back down in the evening/night.

I also carry a spare pair of AA and CR123's in my chest rig just in case.

At the worst I have my troy BUIS mounted.

Most people I know who use Eotechs will run a cowhittnes... just in case. Aimpoints... the possibility is still there but really you should never have to worry about battery life/ auto-shutoff.

Triji... well dont even worry bout it
